If your YouTube Live loop stream buffers, first find out whether the encoder is dropping frames on the way to YouTube or whether playback is buffering only for some viewers. Measure the upload connection used by the encoder, choose a bitrate it can sustain with headroom, and check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a representative test. There is no established India-specific bitrate or universal ISP fault; your actual connection and route matter.

Why is my YouTube Live stream buffering?

“Buffering” can describe different problems: a viewer’s picture pauses, the broadcast arrives with a delay, or the live feed disconnects. Those symptoms do not by themselves identify where the fault is.

  • OBS reports network-dropped frames: The encoder’s connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to keep up with the selected bitrate. OBS describes its dropped-frame indicator this way in Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
  • Only one viewer has trouble: Check that viewer’s device and connection before changing the encoder settings.
  • Several viewers on the same network have trouble: A shared network may be involved.
  • Viewers on different networks report pauses while OBS shows no network drops: Compare YouTube’s stream-health messages, the local encoder output, and the viewers’ locations and devices. A healthy local preview and no OBS drops do not prove every viewer’s playback path is healthy.

YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends comparing the scope of viewer reports and checking for encoder errors, CPU load, and problems in a local archive. If the local output is sound, investigate the outbound connection; if it is not, fix the encoder or source before blaming the network.

What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live in India?

Use YouTube’s codec-specific live encoder guidance as a target, constrained by the sustained upload speed available to the encoder. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 targets in its live encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees that an ISP, city, Wi-Fi link, or route to ingest can sustain that rate.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

For AV1 and H.265/HEVC, the recommended figures in the table are separate from H.264’s figures. Confirm YouTube’s current table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying a video-upload bitrate to a live stream.

Measure upload, not the advertised download speed

Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and device the encoder will use, under conditions representative of the stream. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room; shared network traffic can reduce the capacity left for the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips. A single short test does not establish that a connection will remain stable all day, so repeat it during the hours when buffering usually occurs.

OBS offers a different, additional starting heuristic: begin at about 75% of total upload speed when choosing a bitrate. That is OBS troubleshooting advice, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stability (OBS Project, September 30, 2024). Treat it as a starting point, then check actual stream health.

Lower the settings if the connection cannot sustain them

If upload fluctuates or the stream’s total bitrate leaves too little headroom, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the connection can sustain the stream. OBS has a dynamic bitrate adjustment option in supported versions that can lower video quality when a connection cannot keep up; it is a fallback, not a cure for an unreliable connection or insufficient capacity. Check the label and availability in your installed OBS version.

Which encoder settings should I check?

For a loop, verify the live encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance rather than assuming that static or slow-moving footage makes the upload path reliable. YouTube’s encoder recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Follow the current table for the codec and output format you use.

  • Use a bitrate that fits measured sustained upload with room for variation and other network use.
  • Check that the selected resolution and frame rate match the bitrate target you chose.
  • Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Check OBS statistics, CPU load, YouTube stream-health messages, and a local archive if you record one. This helps distinguish network drops from an encoder or source problem.
  • Test with representative audio and motion before the broadcast. During a stream, check the watch page and mobile playback and monitor audio and video, as advised by YouTube’s streaming tips.

Should I use normal, low, or ultra-low latency?

For a loop that does not need near-real-time interaction, start with normal latency. YouTube warns in Manage live stream settings: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Low and ultra-low latency are chiefly useful when audience interaction needs a faster response; less read-ahead buffer can make playback more vulnerable to interruptions. YouTube describes low latency as under 10 seconds and ultra-low latency as under five seconds for most viewers; these are typical latency figures, not guarantees or buffering thresholds. YouTube’s current settings guidance places 4K streams at normal latency.

How can I isolate Wi-Fi, equipment, and ISP problems?

  1. Compare wired and wireless: If the encoder uses Wi-Fi and OBS shows network drops, test with Ethernet if practical. OBS notes that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming.” A cable can isolate the local wireless segment, but it cannot fix insufficient ISP upload, route congestion, or viewer-side buffering. Cat6 is an optional choice only if the device and router support Ethernet and the cable can reach them.
  2. Check the network path: Restarting the modem or router and checking cables and network devices are reasonable diagnostics. OBS also lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, modem/router connectivity, and congestion along an ISP route as possible causes.
  3. Change software cautiously: If you test whether a VPN, security tool, or network-prioritization utility is affecting the connection, change one thing at a time and restore protections afterward. Only add an OBS exception to security software if evidence points to it as the cause. If OBS network options were changed and did not help, return them to their defaults.
  4. Contact the ISP with observations: If the problem persists, share test results and timestamps with the ISP. Record the connection type, upload-test conditions, stream bitrate and resolution, OBS dropped-frame figures, YouTube health messages, and which viewers were affected. That is more useful than assuming a particular provider or city is at fault.

These checks follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and OBS’s stream buffering guidance. The platform documentation is not India-specific: it establishes no special bitrate adjustment, ISP ranking, city-level diagnosis, or general difference between mobile data and fixed broadband. Test the connection you actually use.

How should I test a recurring loop stream?

  1. Run a test using the intended encoder, content, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  2. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and OBS for network-dropped frames, encoder errors, and CPU load.
  3. Compare the local preview or archive with viewer reports. Ask whether reports come from one person, a shared network, or viewers on separate connections.
  4. Repeat the test during the time window when the issue usually happens. Keep a log of timestamps, connection type, settings, OBS statistics, YouTube warnings, and report scope.
  5. Check the watch page and mobile playback, and verify local archive integrity if your setup records one.
