Set your encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the warning remains, verify the frames-per-second conversion and the stream YouTube is actually receiving; ingestion errors can produce an unexpected GOP size.
What YouTube’s 2-second recommendation means
A keyframe interval is the time between keyframes in the encoded video. Many encoders express that interval as a number of frames, often through a GOP-size or keyframe-frequency control. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend 2 seconds and say not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance says to send keyframes every 2 seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming error guidance are the relevant references.
The 4-second figure is a maximum, not the target to choose when troubleshooting. YouTube warns that an interval over four seconds can cause buffering.
Convert the interval to frames
When the encoder accepts a frame count rather than seconds, multiply the encoded frame rate by two to get the frame count for a 2-second interval.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Encoded frame rate | Frame count for 2 seconds | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | 60 frames | YouTube’s documented example |
| 60 fps | 120 frames | Calculated as 60 frames per second Ă— 2 seconds |
These values correspond to the encoded stream’s frame rate. If you change that rate, recalculate the frame count: leaving a frame-based GOP value unchanged can change the interval in seconds.
Fix the warning in the encoder
- Find the relevant control. In the encoder sending the live stream, look for a setting labelled keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP size. The label and units vary by encoder; YouTube’s general guidance does not establish a specific menu path.
- Set the interval to 2 seconds. Use a time-based value if available. If the control takes frames, use twice the encoded frames per second—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Recheck it after changing frame rate. Confirm the frame count still represents two seconds at the rate being sent.
- Check the stream YouTube receives if the warning persists. YouTube says ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes, so the configured value may not match the stream’s effective keyframe spacing.
- Use a closed GOP if the encoder offers that setting. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Not every encoder exposes a GOP-type control.
- Test before the event and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing and monitoring during the stream, which can help reveal whether the warning has cleared.
Keep the keyframe fix separate from other encoder settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a 2-second recommended keyframe frequency with a 4-second maximum. These are separate settings: do not change codec or bitrate to resolve a keyframe warning unless YouTube reports a separate problem with them. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube supports encoder-based streaming through software applications and standalone hardware encoders; its encoder guide lists Open Broadcaster Software as open-source streaming software. That does not mean a particular interface has a specific setting path or that you need new equipment. The documented remedy is to correct the encoder configuration. More on encoder-based streaming is available in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
Common causes and what to check
- The encoder is set to more than 2 seconds: change it to 2 seconds; do not treat the 4-second maximum as the recommended target.
- The GOP count was copied from a different frame rate: calculate the frame count again from the current encoded fps.
- The setting looks correct but YouTube still reports a mismatch: check for ingestion errors that may affect the GOP size of the stream received.
- The encoder offers open and closed GOP options: use closed GOP for optimal transcoding when available, in line with YouTube’s guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a fix for a keyframe warning in an encoder you already use. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it sends them as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
