For a typical H.264 YouTube Live stream, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for your resolution and frame rate. In FFmpeg, start with h264_nvenc and a preset your NVIDIA GPU can sustain in real time. For 1080p60, YouTube’s displayed H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health before and during the event.

Recommended starting settings for YouTube Live

Use the following as a baseline for a broadly compatible SDR stream. Check that your FFmpeg build and GPU accept the selected NVENC options; support can differ by GPU generation, FFmpeg build and installed runtime.

  • Transport: RTMPS, where supported.
  • Video codec: H.264 using FFmpeg’s h264_nvenc.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: every two seconds. Set the GOP length to twice the frame rate: for example, -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps.
  • Preset and tuning: start by testing a preset such as p4 or p5, with a real-time tuning choice supported by your build. These are starting points, not guaranteed best settings.
  • Picture: progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 color for SDR, 8-bit SDR, two B-frames and one reference frame are among YouTube’s advanced recommendations. Confirm your FFmpeg options and source match the intended output.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; for stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, HEVC and AV1 as ingest options, supports up to 60 fps, specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. H.264 is a practical baseline; use HEVC or AV1 only if the GPU, FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest path all support your workflow.

Choose the H.264 bitrate by resolution and frame rate

The table gives YouTube’s current displayed H.264 bitrate recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03. The page did not identify a publication year. Choose the row matching the resolution and frame rate you actually send to YouTube.

Ingest resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 bitrate
2160p60 50 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps
360p30 4 Mbps

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. Leave upload headroom for fluctuations and other network use. If the connection is unstable, lower the target resolution or bitrate and test again rather than assuming a stream that starts will remain healthy.

Build the FFmpeg encoding settings

This is an encoding fragment, not a complete tested command. Add it to an input and output command appropriate to your source, capture method and RTMPS ingest URL. In FFmpeg, input options belong before the input they affect; output encoding options belong before the output URL.

-c:v h264_nvenc -preset p4 -tune ll -rc cbr -b:v <YouTube-recommended-bitrate> -maxrate <matching-bitrate> -bufsize <chosen-VBV-buffer> -g <2-times-fps> -bf 2

For example, the GOP value for 1080p60 is 120 frames; for 1080p30 it is 60. Substitute the bitrate from YouTube’s H.264 table for your target. Confirm the actual keyframe cadence and output behavior with your installed encoder rather than relying on the command fragment alone.

Preset, tuning and buffer choices

NVENC presets trade encoding speed against quality, and the best choice depends on the GPU generation, workload and real-time headroom. Try an appropriate preset with a representative source, then check that encoding keeps pace without dropped frames. NVIDIA documents CBR with a one-second VBV buffer for predictable bandwidth and performance in its real-time game and studio broadcasting scenario. That is NVIDIA’s scenario-specific guidance, not a YouTube buffer requirement. Buffer sizing and low-latency tuning can vary by use case and FFmpeg build.

Stream key and RTMPS output

In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your live event. Use the RTMPS server URL YouTube supplies where available, and put the key in the output URL or the method your workflow uses to provide authentication. Do not publish a command containing a real key in logs, screenshots or scripts shared with others. Exact control-room labels can change; follow the current live setup screen for the selected stream.

Match the settings to your source and use case

Resolution and frame rate

Higher resolution preserves more detail, while higher frame rates can make motion smoother; both increase bandwidth needs and encoding load. Choose the highest combination your source, GPU and stable upload connection can maintain, not simply the largest value in the table. A documentary with slow shots may not benefit as much from 60 fps as fast-moving footage, but the source frame rate and intended presentation should guide the choice.

Latency

Lower latency can make interaction more immediate, but YouTube notes that lower-latency settings may increase buffering for viewers. For a scheduled documentary stream with little or no live interaction, reliability may matter more than the lowest possible delay. Set the latency mode in YouTube’s live settings to suit the event, then verify playback and stream health.

Test before the event and monitor stream health

  1. Check compatibility: confirm that your NVIDIA GPU and FFmpeg build expose the required NVENC encoder, preset and tuning options. Check codec and feature support for the specific GPU and software build.
  2. Run a representative test: include the kind of movement and audio your actual program contains. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear in complex scenes or loud passages.
  3. Verify the output: confirm resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio at the receiving end. A process that launches successfully does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream health: review its indicators and messages during the test and the event. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream” and “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions, its live streaming setup guidance, NVIDIA’s FFmpeg and NVIDIA GPU hardware acceleration guide, and the FFmpeg H.264 NVENC option definitions. FFmpeg’s moving source page does not establish that every option behaves identically in every release.

Troubleshooting common NVENC live-stream problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not receive the stream Check that the selected stream is live-ready, the RTMPS server URL and stream key match it, and the key has not been mistyped or revoked. Confirm that the output URL is formed correctly and your network permits the connection.
Stream starts but YouTube reports poor health Check whether bitrate is sustained by the upload connection, verify CBR and the two-second keyframe interval, and inspect YouTube’s health messages. Retest at a lower resolution or bitrate if network headroom is inadequate.
Encoding falls behind or frames are dropped Reduce GPU load by trying a faster NVENC preset, lowering resolution or frame rate, or reducing competing GPU workloads. Confirm that the chosen encoder settings are supported by your GPU and build.
Keyframe interval is wrong Set GOP length to two times the output frame rate and verify the resulting keyframe cadence. For 30 fps use 60 frames; for 60 fps use 120 frames.
Options are rejected by FFmpeg Check the installed FFmpeg build’s h264_nvenc options and supported tuning/preset values. Build and runtime support vary; an option from another version may not be available.
Viewers experience buffering despite a healthy encoder Review the YouTube latency mode and consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better fits the event. Lower latency can increase viewer buffering.
