YouTube Live Encoder Settings for a Pre-Recorded Church Service Loop

Use H.264 CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and AAC stereo; choose YouTube’s bitrate for your source resolution and test the complete prerecorded loop before the service.

For a pre-recorded church service loop, start with H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and AAC stereo audio. Use 1080p30 at 14 Mbps if the source is 1080p and your upload connection can sustain it; use 720p30 at 8 Mbps if the source or connection calls for a lower target. Match the source frame rate, leave network headroom and test the complete playback loop before the service. These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not settings for encoding the video file you upload.

Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings

These settings describe the stream sent from your encoder to YouTube. They are separate from the encoding settings used to create or upload the prerecorded service file. YouTube’s live encoder specifications give the following starting points for a standard SDR stream.

Setting Starting point How to choose
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the stream URL and key provided for your event.
Video codec H.264 YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use a codec your encoder and workflow support reliably.
Rate control CBR Choose constant bitrate for live ingest.
Resolution and bitrate 1080p30 at 14 Mbps, or 720p30 at 8 Mbps for H.264 Match the source and the upload connection. Do not upscale a lower-resolution file just to select a larger number.
Frame rate Match the source, up to 60 fps A 30 fps source generally belongs in a 30 fps stream; avoid needless frame-rate conversion.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps YouTube also permits MP3. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC.
SDR picture format Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit Use these advanced recommendations when your source and encoder allow it.

Choose a resolution and bitrate that fit the source

YouTube’s published live bitrate recommendations differ by codec. Values below are Mbps and apply to live ingest, not file upload encoding.

Resolution / frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
1080p60 12 17
1080p30 10 14
720p60 6 8
720p30 6 8
480p30 3 4
360p30 3 4

For a mostly static pulpit or sanctuary shot, 1080p30 is a sensible starting point when the recording is 1080p and the connection is steady. A 720p30 stream is a reasonable fallback if the source is 720p or the upload path cannot reliably sustain the higher bitrate. For services with lyrics, slides or faces, check that the chosen resolution keeps text and facial details legible. YouTube’s documentation does not designate a church-specific best resolution or a universal winner between H.264 and AV1/H.265; compatibility and stable delivery matter.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Allow enough upload capacity

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. At 14 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, a simple calculation using that margin works out to about 17.7 Mbps of stable capacity for the stream alone. This is calculated from YouTube’s recommendations, not a separate YouTube threshold; other household or church network use calls for more capacity.

Do not treat a brief speed-test peak as guaranteed sustained throughput. A stable connection that can hold the selected bitrate is more useful than a higher target that repeatedly fluctuates. YouTube’s streaming tips provide its network guidance.

Set up and test the prerecorded loop

The loop itself is controlled by the media playback or encoder workflow you choose. YouTube’s encoder documentation specifies how to send a live stream, but does not define one universal loop button or a common set of loop steps for every tool. Confirm that your chosen software or hardware can repeat the recording and determine how it handles the transition from the end back to the beginning.

  1. Prepare the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Obtain the event’s stream URL and key, and keep the key private. Enter them only in the encoder you selected. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers the event setup details.
  2. Configure the encoder. Set RTMPS where supported, select H.264 with CBR, choose the resolution and bitrate appropriate to the source and sustained upload, match the source frame rate, set a two-second keyframe interval, and configure AAC stereo audio.
  3. Test the actual media workflow. Make a test stream with similar audio and motion, and play the prerecorded service through its entire loop. Check both the start and the end-to-start transition; this catches playback stops, silence, abrupt cuts or other problems that a short encoder test may miss.
  4. Preview before starting the event. Confirm that the stream appears in Live Control Room, then verify that it is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
  5. Start early and monitor. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Watch stream health, warnings, and audio and video quality as the broadcast runs.

Latency, DVR and viewer access

DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. Latency is the delay between capture or encoding and playback; lower latency can increase buffering. For an unattended prerecorded loop, low latency is usually less important than stable playback. Choose the latency and DVR options in the event settings according to how viewers will use the service, then check actual playback during the test.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

  • Stream health warns about insufficient bitrate or instability: Confirm the encoder is using CBR and the intended bitrate. Check sustained upload capacity and reduce the resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot hold the target; preserve the recommended headroom.
  • The stream looks soft or text is hard to read: Check the source resolution first. Avoid upscaling; if the source supports 1080p and the connection is stable, use the applicable 1080p bitrate recommendation rather than a lower-resolution stream.
  • Viewers see a freeze, black screen or a break at the loop point: Check the playback tool’s repeat behavior and test the entire file, especially the end-to-start transition. YouTube’s encoder settings alone do not control prerecorded-media looping.
  • Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync: Verify that the encoder is sending the intended audio track as AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and check the file’s playback in the test stream.
  • The event is not visible to viewers: Check the Live Control Room preview and event visibility, then test the channel or watch page on a second device or mobile connection.
  • The stream stops after a brief network or YouTube interruption: Check the encoder and playback workflow’s reconnect behavior, and verify that the media resumes where intended. Do not assume every encoder handles recovery or loop continuity in the same way.

Keep the recording and stream eligible for YouTube

Having a live encoder does not grant rights to the recording. Before streaming a service, confirm that the church or channel has permission for every included element, including music, performances, slides, footage and other material. Check the relevant rights and YouTube’s applicable policies before the event; do not assume that a religious or nonprofit context automatically clears copyrighted material. YouTube’s upload encoding settings concern uploaded files, so keep those separate from the live-ingest settings above.

For a practical rights review, use the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a loop.
