For a 1440p60 YouTube gaming stream, use a 2-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), and RTMP or encrypted RTMPS. YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, or 34 Mbps for H.264. At 1440p30, the corresponding recommendations are 15 Mbps and 21 Mbps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations—not a guarantee that your encoder, hardware, or connection can sustain them.
For a continuous channel, plan the archive as carefully as the encoder: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep sessions below that threshold if you need YouTube’s automatic archive, and make a local recording backup.
Recommended YouTube settings for 1440p gaming
Choose the row for your frame rate and the column for the codec your encoder and hardware can produce. YouTube’s recommendations are settings for sending a stream to the platform; the minimum bitrate is not the recommended quality target.

Source: YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval. Use the recommended bitrate for your codec and target frame rate rather than treating the minimum as a quality setting.

Configure the encoder before going live

Set the video format
Use 2560 × 1440 output at either 60 or 30 frames per second, matching the row used to choose your bitrate. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Confirm that your encoder and hardware support the codec you select; if not, use a supported option and its matching bitrate recommendation.

Set rate control and bitrate
Select CBR and enter the recommended bitrate from the table. A higher setting is not automatically better if your system or connection cannot sustain it. YouTube advises choosing a quality level reliable for your internet connection and testing before the actual broadcast; it does not establish a universal upload-speed headroom multiplier.

Set keyframes and transport
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Keep it at or below 4 seconds. Choose RTMPS when available for encrypted transport, or RTMP if that is what your workflow supports.

Check advanced SDR video options
YouTube’s advanced SDR guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. Check your encoder’s labels and hardware support before changing advanced options; available controls can vary by encoder.

Set audio to match the program
For stereo, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio, its guidance supports AAC only over RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Choose the audio format your encoder and source actually support.

Connect the YouTube stream
Use your YouTube Live Control Room workflow to obtain the stream key, then enter it in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not show it on screen or share it publicly. Verify the selected stream and key in the control room before starting the encoder.

Design the continuous stream around YouTube’s archive limit
Keep replay sessions under 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including 1440p and 2160p streams. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a replay channel where the VOD matters, end and start separate sessions before reaching 12 hours rather than treating one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast as a dependable archive strategy. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording backup.
Do not confuse DVR with the saved replay
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream, but for very long streams YouTube may limit or disable rewind beyond 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. DVR behavior during a broadcast and whether YouTube creates a post-stream archive are separate issues; neither should be assumed for a 24/7 event. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Record independently
Keep a local recording if preserving the replay is important. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; storage needs depend on recording bitrate and how long you intend to retain footage, so choose capacity for your own workflow rather than relying on a universal drive-size figure.

Test and monitor the stream

Run a representative test
Test gameplay with motion similar to the actual broadcast, plus the intended audio. A static desktop or menu does not reveal the same encoding and connection problems as fast-moving gameplay.

Check Live Control Room health
During testing and the live session, review stream status, real-time analytics, and any warnings or error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance points streamers to health messages and testing before going live.

Confirm the archive workflow
For a session that should become a YouTube replay, verify that it ends below 12 hours and that local recording is enabled if you need a backup. Do not infer successful archiving merely from a healthy live status.

Common problems and fixes
- Stream health warns of connection instability: Check whether the connection and encoder can sustain the configured bitrate. Test at the chosen settings and select a quality that is reliable for the available connection; YouTube does not prescribe one universal upload-headroom multiplier.
- Fast gameplay looks poor despite using the minimum bitrate: The minimum is only a floor. Use the recommended bitrate for the selected codec and frame rate, if your system and connection can sustain it.
- The encoder rejects a codec or cannot keep up: Confirm hardware and software support. Switch to a codec the setup can encode reliably and use that codec’s corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation.
- The archived replay is missing after a very long broadcast: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep archive-dependent sessions shorter and use a local recording backup.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: YouTube may limit or disable DVR rewind on streams longer than 12 hours. This live-viewing limitation is separate from the post-stream archive.
- Audio is unsupported or sounds wrong: Check that the selected audio codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate match YouTube’s guidance and the encoder’s actual output.
When to choose an encoder or streaming method
YouTube’s verified encoders page lists software and services, and specifically describes CamStreamer App as supporting 24/7 continuous streams.
