Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo find out whether Wi-Fi is contributing to dropped frames, check the encoder’s specific dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then compare a realistic test over Wi-Fi with one over Ethernet from the same PC. Keep the stream settings and other network conditions as similar as possible. A speed test can help, but a single result—or a strong Wi-Fi signal icon—cannot prove that the full route to YouTube is stable.
First identify which frames are dropping
In OBS, open the statistics panel and note which counter increases. Network dropped frames indicate a connection problem: OBS says the connection to the remote service may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Missed frames from rendering lag and skipped frames from encoding lag point instead to PC or GPU workload. These problems can make a stream look choppy, but they are not evidence by themselves that Wi-Fi is at fault.
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the test as well. YouTube’s stream-health message guide explains ingestion and configuration warnings. Treat those messages as another diagnostic signal, not as a substitute for identifying the encoder counter.
Check the stream settings and required upload headroom
Before testing, write down the video bitrate, codec, resolution, and frame rate configured in the encoder. Then check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for that exact combination. Recommendations vary by codec and video format; for example, YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not thresholds for Wi-Fi signal strength or guarantees of successful delivery.

YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Shared use matters: uploads, video calls, backups, or other people on the network can reduce what is available to the stream. Compare the configured bitrate with stable outbound upload capacity, not download speed alone.
Run a practical Wi-Fi stability test
- Note the baseline. Record the encoder settings, which dropped-frame counter is increasing, and any YouTube stream-health messages. Also note other active household or office network use.
- Measure upload from the streaming PC. Run an upload speed test on the same computer that runs the encoder. Repeat it at times and under network-use conditions that resemble the planned broadcast. A speed test captures performance at that moment; it does not establish that the entire route to YouTube ingest will remain stable throughout a stream.
- Test a representative broadcast over Wi-Fi. Start a private or unlisted stream and include audio and movement similar to the actual event. YouTube recommends this kind of pre-live test. Watch the encoder’s network dropped-frame counter and stream health in Live Control Room while it runs.
- Repeat over Ethernet if feasible. Connect the same PC to the router by Ethernet and repeat with the same encoder settings and, as far as practical, similar network demand. Compare network dropped frames and YouTube messages—not just a speed-test peak. If Ethernet performs better, that is evidence the Wi-Fi segment may contribute, but it does not identify every cause or guarantee that a cable alone will fix the problem.
- Make one change and retest. If Wi-Fi is worse, reduce competing network traffic, improve the PC’s connection to the access point, or use Ethernet. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the result improves.
OBS notes that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming” in its connection troubleshooting guidance. That is a reason to compare connections, not a claim that every Wi-Fi network is unsuitable. Signal bars describe the PC’s link to the access point; the stream still has to pass through local network equipment, the ISP, and YouTube’s ingest route. The cited guidance provides no universal signal-strength threshold that proves a stream will be stable.

Interpret the results and choose the next fix
- Wi-Fi drops frames; Ethernet does not: The wireless segment or its local conditions may be contributing. Try reducing competing traffic, moving the PC or improving its connection to the access point, or using Ethernet. Repeat the test to confirm the pattern.
- Both connections drop frames: Check whether the configured bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% upload room, and whether other devices are using bandwidth. Then investigate the router or modem, network drivers, VPN or security software, network-optimization utilities, and the ISP or route to YouTube. OBS lists these as areas to investigate; none is a guaranteed cause.
- Network dropped frames stay at zero, but the picture is choppy: Focus on rendering or encoding performance rather than Wi-Fi. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers GPU and rendering load; reducing output resolution or frame rate and lowering GPU load are possible remedies.
- The speed test looks ample, but the stream still drops frames: The test is only a snapshot and may not reflect sustained upload, competing traffic during the event, or the complete path to YouTube. Use the live test counters and stream-health messages to narrow down where to investigate.
- YouTube shows a health warning: Read the specific message in the YouTube stream-health documentation and check the relevant encoder or ingestion configuration. A warning may concern configuration rather than Wi-Fi alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to a streaming PC: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
