If your 10 Mbps upload rate is sustained and reliable, that leaves about 4 Mbps of measured capacity unused—more than YouTube’s recommended 20% buffer. Use H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and 128 kbps stereo audio as a straightforward setup. Test the connection with representative audio and movement before the broadcast.
Recommended 720p YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists 6 Mbps for 720p at both 30 and 60 frames per second. It does not give devotional songs a separate bitrate: the recommendation is based on resolution and frame rate, not the programme’s subject or genre. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for these settings.
| Setting | Starting point | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps for mostly static imagery; 720p at 60 fps if the visuals have fast motion and your connection remains stable. | YouTube lists 6 Mbps for either frame rate at 720p. Choose based on the motion in the programme, not on an assumed bitrate advantage. |
| Video bitrate | 6 Mbps | Enter 6000 kbps if your encoder requests kilobits per second. |
| Codec | H.264 | A straightforward supported choice. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1; use them only if your encoder and workflow support them. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | Set the encoder to maintain a constant video bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 kbps for stereo | For stereo audio, use 128 kbps as listed in YouTube’s advanced settings. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends the encrypted version of RTMP. |
Does 10 Mbps upload leave enough headroom?
At a steady 10 Mbps upload rate, a 6 Mbps video stream leaves roughly 4 Mbps for the rest of the connection—about 40% of the measured capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. This makes 6 Mbps a reasonable starting point if 10 Mbps is a reliable, sustained measurement rather than a best-case speed-test result. The estimate is not a guarantee: other upload traffic, Wi-Fi instability or fluctuations in the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming bandwidth tips.
Check the connection before the event
- Run an upload speed test near the time and place you plan to stream. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate.
- Pause avoidable uploads and backups on the same network. If the connection is shared or variable, the speed-test result may overstate what is available during the broadcast.
- Make a private or unlisted test stream, if appropriate, using the planned resolution, frame rate, audio and visual movement.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the live event. If the stream is unstable, reduce the video bitrate and retest rather than assuming the nominal 10 Mbps figure will hold.
Choose 30 or 60 fps for the devotional stream
For a mostly static image, album art or slow-moving devotional visuals, 30 fps is a sensible practical choice. Use 60 fps when the programme includes movement that benefits from smoother motion and your connection and encoder handle it reliably. YouTube lists the same 6 Mbps 720p live bitrate for both frame rates in its guidance; it does not specify a lower bitrate for static devotional imagery or a devotional-specific setting.

Set latency to match the broadcast
Latency is the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and display to viewers. For a devotional music broadcast without audience interaction, normal latency is a sensible default. Choose a lower-latency option when real-time interaction matters, bearing in mind YouTube says lower latency can lead to more playback buffering. See YouTube’s live stream settings and latency guidance.
Configure the encoder and YouTube event
- Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio. Set the event’s visibility and other details for your audience. Open the stream settings and copy the stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not share it publicly, and use YouTube’s reset option if it is exposed.
- Set the video output. Choose 1280 × 720 resolution, 30 or 60 fps, H.264, CBR and 6000 kbps video bitrate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, staying at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Set the audio output. Choose AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, with 128 kbps for stereo audio. Confirm that the correct input is selected and that the audio is audible without clipping.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection.
- Start a test and verify it in YouTube Studio. Include the type of sound and movement planned for the actual event. Check stream health and any warnings before beginning the public broadcast.
- Start the event deliberately. Confirm the live preview, audio and stream health in YouTube Studio, then start or schedule the public event as intended.
Live encoding bitrate is not prerecorded upload bitrate
The 6 Mbps recommendation is for sending a real-time live stream to YouTube. It is not the same as the bitrate guidance for uploading a finished video file. YouTube’s separate guidance for prerecorded 720p SDR uploads lists 5 Mbps at standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates. Do not copy those upload figures into a live encoder setting; see YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream problems
- Dropped frames or poor stream health: The available upload bandwidth may be lower or less stable than the speed test suggested, or another device may be uploading. Stop competing uploads, check the connection, and test at a lower video bitrate if needed.
- Viewers report buffering: Check YouTube’s stream health and test playback on a separate connection. Lower latency can increase buffering; for a non-interactive music stream, normal latency is usually the better fit.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Check that the encoder is using the intended audio input and that levels are not clipping. Verify the selected audio format and stereo bitrate, then make another test stream.
- The stream does not connect: Confirm that the encoder is using the current YouTube stream key and a supported ingest protocol. If the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream is live but the picture looks poor: Confirm the output resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder. A 720p output should use the recommended 6 Mbps starting point when the connection can sustain it; adjust only after testing.
