YouTube Live Bitrate for 4K 30fps Loop Streaming

Use 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K 30fps, then allow upload headroom for audio and backup streams. YouTube lists no special lower bitrate for loops.

For a 4K (2160p) YouTube Live stream at 30 fps, use a recommended video bitrate of 42 Mbps with H.264 or 30 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. YouTube’s listed minimums are 11 Mbps for H.264 and 8 Mbps for AV1/H.265; those are minimums, not the recommended targets. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate setting for looped footage.

Recommended bitrate by codec

Video codec YouTube’s minimum at 4K/2160p, 30 fps YouTube’s recommended bitrate
H.264 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
AV1 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 8 Mbps 30 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published ingestion settings for the specified resolution, frame rate, and codec. The official bitrate table does not list a lower rate for repeated, static, or looped material. A simple scene may encode differently in practice, but that is not a reason to treat a lower bitrate as YouTube’s recommendation. Any lower-rate experiment should be checked for both stream health and the resulting picture quality.

The cited YouTube Help pages do not show publication dates; their figures were verified in 2026. They do not report comparative tests for a particular encoder, scene, or loop, so neither target guarantees a specific perceived quality.

Encoder settings for a 4K 30fps stream

Use the following settings as a starting point, checking that your encoder supports the codec you choose and that YouTube accepts the incoming stream:

  • Video codec and bitrate: H.264 at 42 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 at 30 Mbps, using YouTube’s recommended targets.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Connection protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended protocol.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth in YouTube’s advanced encoder guidance.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed options. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC.

For 4K/2160p, YouTube sets the stream to normal latency; its bitrate guidance says the low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution.

Calculate the upload capacity you need

Plan for stable outbound upload capacity, not the download speed shown in an internet plan. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and warns that other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce capacity available to your stream.

A practical estimate is: required upload capacity ≈ (video bitrate + audio bitrate + any backup-stream bitrate) × 1.20. This applies YouTube’s headroom recommendation to the full stream load; it is a planning calculation, not a separately published YouTube threshold.

  • For 42 Mbps H.264 video alone, 20% headroom gives about 50.4 Mbps of upload capacity.
  • For 30 Mbps AV1/H.265 video alone, 20% headroom gives about 36 Mbps.

Those illustrations exclude audio and backup streams. Add their bitrates before applying the headroom allowance. Measure outbound speed and consider whether it remains reliable during the hours your stream will run. A wired connection can be a practical choice for a fixed setup where available, but a cable cannot create bandwidth beyond what your internet service provides.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and set up the stream. Use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not share or publish it.
  2. Configure the encoder. Select the target resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval above. Confirm the stream is using RTMPS if your encoder offers it.
  3. Run an upload-speed test and start a test stream. YouTube advises testing before going live. Check that available, stable outbound capacity covers video, audio, any backup feed, and headroom.
  4. Match the test to the planned content. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see. A still title card alone may not reveal problems that appear during motion or sound.
  5. Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s live stream health information during the test and event. Address dropped frames, instability, or quality problems before depending on the stream for a long loop.

Loop-specific viewing settings

YouTube’s cited bitrate guidance does not prescribe special encoder settings for looping. YouTube’s live settings documentation describes DVR, which lets viewers pause and resume during a live stream; whether that suits a continuous documentary or information loop depends on how you want viewers to watch. YouTube’s general latency guidance notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, while its encoder guidance assigns 4K streams normal latency.
