These are YouTube’s general H.264 live-encoder recommendations. The cited guidance does not give a distinct bitrate for x264 veryfast, so use the same 14 Mbps recommendation rather than applying a preset-specific adjustment.
Set it in your encoder
Encoder menus differ, but configure the stream with these values wherever your software exposes the corresponding controls:
- Choose H.264 encoding through x264 and select the veryfast preset.
- Set the output resolution to 1920Ă—1080 and frame rate to 30 fps.
- Set rate control to CBR and video bitrate to 14,000 Kbps (14 Mbps). If your connection cannot sustain a reliable stream at that setting, test a lower quality level; 5 Mbps is YouTube’s listed minimum, not its recommendation.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not configure an interval longer than 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS for the connection to YouTube when your encoder offers it.
- Run a test before the event with representative audio and movement, then check YouTube’s stream health and alerts during the broadcast.
Check the connection before going live
Bitrate is only useful if the upload connection can sustain it consistently. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a quality level that works reliably on the available connection. Its guidance does not prescribe a specific upload-speed headroom multiplier, so avoid treating any particular margin as an official YouTube requirement.

Test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, including comparable audio and motion. A static image or silent test may not reveal issues that appear during the actual program. Watch stream health and alerts while live so you can respond if the connection or incoming stream becomes unstable.
Does x264 veryfast change the bitrate?
Not according to YouTube’s published encoder guidance: it gives general H.264 recommendations and no separate bitrate or adjustment for x264’s veryfast preset. The recommended 14 Mbps and listed 5 Mbps minimum are YouTube’s H.264 figures for 1080p at 30 fps; they are not claims that every x264 preset produces identical image quality at a given bitrate.
