For a pre-recorded video sent to YouTube as a live stream at 720p/30 fps, YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. The table lists minimums of 3 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively, but those minimums do not guarantee a stable stream. YouTube also recommends keeping 20% of your upload bandwidth free beyond the stream’s total bitrate. These are encoder-to-YouTube live settings—not recommendations for uploading a finished video file.
Choose a live bitrate your connection can sustain
When you play a pre-made video through an encoder into a YouTube live event, YouTube receives a live stream. Use the live-ingest bitrate table for that workflow. The 720p figures below are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance; its retrieved page does not state a publication or revision date. Values were checked on October 3, 2026.
| Live video setting | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest values, not a promise that your connection will maintain them or that the codecs will produce identical visual quality. The bitrate is the encoded stream sent to YouTube. Include audio and any other live streams using the same connection when assessing available upstream capacity.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Outbound upload speed—not download speed—is the relevant capacity. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare. For a single stream, that means planning for the stream to use no more than about 80% of the upload capacity you can reliably sustain. For example, an 8 Mbps stream calls for about 10 Mbps of available upload capacity under that headroom rule; a 6 Mbps stream calls for about 7.5 Mbps. Treat these as planning arithmetic, not stability guarantees.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Run an upload speed test when your connection is being used as it will be during the stream.
- Account for other people or devices sharing the connection, and for any concurrent stream or backup feed.
- Do not assume a single speed-test result proves the connection will remain stable throughout an event.
YouTube’s streaming tips specifically note that shared network use can reduce the upload bandwidth available to your stream. If the upstream capacity is inadequate or fluctuates too much, reduce the resolution rather than treating the listed minimum bitrate as a safe target.
Configure and test the encoder
- Set the stream to 1280 × 720. Choose 30 fps for a constrained connection unless your production needs a different frame rate. YouTube’s table lists the same bitrate values for 720p at 60 fps, so do not assume that switching from 60 to 30 fps changes its recommended bitrate.
- Select a supported ingest codec and bitrate. Use H.264 at the 8 Mbps recommendation, or AV1/H.265 at 6 Mbps, provided your encoder and workflow support the selected codec. If you cannot sustain the relevant bitrate with headroom, lower the resolution and test again.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s general live encoder guidance specifies CBR for video bitrate.
- Set keyframes to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval is 60 frames.
- Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS transport. Its general guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Run a representative test. Send footage with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages before relying on the setup for an event. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the live control-room workflow.
When 720p is too demanding
If your available upload cannot sustain the chosen 720p bitrate with headroom, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to consider lowering resolution. The live-ingest table also lists 480p/30 and 360p/30 options, with codec-specific bitrate values. Check the current table for the exact value for your chosen resolution and codec, then test it on the actual connection; there is no single fallback bitrate that guarantees stability on every slow connection.

YouTube’s live streaming error messages guidance identifies incorrect bitrate, unsupported settings, and incorrect keyframe frequency among causes of stream errors. If the stream reports an error, verify those settings against YouTube’s current encoder table before changing multiple variables at once.
Do not confuse live ingest with a video upload
If instead you upload the finished video as a regular YouTube video, use YouTube’s separate upload recommendations. For 720p SDR, its upload encoding page lists 5 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those are file-upload recommendations, not live-stream encoder bitrates. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
