For YouTube Live at 4K/2160p and 60 fps on a GeForce RTX 4060, start with NVIDIA NVENC, AV1, CBR at 35 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. If AV1 is unavailable in your software setup, use H.265/HEVC at 35 Mbps or H.264 at 50 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings—not a guarantee that every PC, game, network, or scene will sustain 4K60.

Recommended RTX 4060 settings for YouTube Live 4K60

Use the following as a starting configuration for an SDR stream. YouTube’s recommendations are for live ingest, and the codec matters: its recommended video bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, versus 50 Mbps for H.264. NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 specifications list one eighth-generation NVENC encoder and AV1 encode support, but software and platform paths do not necessarily expose every codec in every configuration.

Setting Starting value Notes
Output resolution and frame rate 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
Encoder NVIDIA NVENC The RTX 4060 has one eighth-generation NVENC encoder, according to NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 specifications.
Codec AV1 for SDR, when available RTX 4060 supports AV1 encode. H.265/HEVC and H.264 are alternatives; use H.265 for HDR guidance.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate.
Video bitrate 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 50 Mbps for H.264 These are YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p60 video ingest bitrates, not audio-inclusive totals.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds Recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps YouTube supports 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit YouTube’s recommended SDR color space and bit depth.
HDR H.265/HEVC, 10-bit YouTube’s HDR guidance recommends H.265 and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the listed settings.
Latency Normal YouTube says the 4K option to improve for low latency is unavailable; 4K streams are optimized for quality with normal latency.

For current platform details, see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. RTX 4060 hardware capability is listed in NVIDIA’s product specifications.

Choosing AV1, H.265, or H.264

AV1 for SDR when your setup offers it

AV1 is a practical first choice for SDR on an RTX 4060 because the card supports AV1 encoding and YouTube lists AV1 ingest at 35 Mbps for 4K60. If AV1 does not appear in your streaming software or ingest setup, do not assume the GPU is defective: codec availability depends on the software and platform path as well as hardware capability.

H.265/HEVC when you need HDR or AV1 is unavailable

YouTube recommends H.265 at 35 Mbps for 4K60. Its HDR guidance points to H.265/HEVC at 10-bit; the listed guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. Select the matching HDR-capable output path only if your source, software, and YouTube stream setup are configured for HDR.

H.264 as a compatibility fallback

H.264 is a listed YouTube ingest option, with a recommended 50 Mbps for 4K60. Do not keep the AV1/HEVC bitrate when switching to H.264 if your goal is to follow YouTube’s recommended ingest values.

The cited platform guidance establishes bitrate recommendations and codec support, not a universal picture-quality winner among these codecs. Choose based on the codec your actual streaming path exposes, the SDR/HDR format you intend to deliver, and whether your system and connection remain stable.

Set up the encoder in OBS

OBS menu wording can vary by version and operating system. The settings below describe the relevant targets rather than promising identical labels on every installation. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide covers NVENC use and upload allocation; YouTube’s current ingest values are the source for the bitrate and protocol recommendations.

  1. Open Settings → Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced if necessary, then open the Streaming tab.
  2. Choose the encoder. Select an NVIDIA NVENC encoder. Where the codec selector is available, choose AV1 for SDR; use H.265/HEVC if required for HDR or if AV1 is not exposed; choose H.264 if that is the available compatible option.
  3. Set rate control and bitrate. Choose CBR. Enter 35,000 Kbps for AV1 or H.265, or 50,000 Kbps for H.264. These figures are video bitrate targets.
  4. Set keyframes to 2 seconds. If OBS requests an interval in seconds, enter 2. If it requests frames, use the equivalent for your output frame rate: 120 frames at 60 fps. Keep the interval at or below YouTube’s 4-second limit.
  5. Open Settings → Video. Set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the output frame rate to 60 fps. Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR as applicable to the available color controls.
  6. Configure audio. Use AAC or MP3, with stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as YouTube’s listed guidance. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
  7. Set the stream service and protocol. Select YouTube and RTMPS where the software offers a protocol choice. Use your YouTube stream key through the service’s stream setup; keep it private and do not include it in screenshots or recordings.
  8. Run a private or unlisted test before the event. Include representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. Confirm the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are actually being received as expected.

If you stream HDR, do not apply the SDR color values blindly: use the HDR path specified by YouTube, including H.265/HEVC and 10-bit guidance, and verify the resulting stream before relying on it.

Check upload capacity and system load

The required upload capacity is more than the video bitrate alone because audio, protocol overhead, and other network use also consume bandwidth. NVIDIA’s OBS guidance suggests keeping the stream bitrate around 75% of measured upload speed to leave room for the game and other programs. Applying that rule of thumb implies roughly 47 Mbps measured upload for a 35 Mbps stream and roughly 67 Mbps for a 50 Mbps stream. These are derived planning figures—not YouTube requirements or stability guarantees.

  • Measure upload performance under conditions similar to the planned stream, including the household or workplace network load.
  • Prefer a wired connection where practical; treat this as a reliability measure, not a YouTube encoder requirement.
  • Watch both network and encoder performance during testing. A sufficient speed test alone does not establish that the PC can encode the actual game scene at 4K60.
  • If the stream is unstable, investigate encoder load, game GPU load, network capacity, and capture/output configuration before raising the bitrate.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot

AV1 or H.265 does not appear

Check that you selected the NVIDIA hardware encoder and that your software and YouTube stream setup expose the codec. The RTX 4060 supports AV1 encode, but that does not ensure the option appears in every configuration. If it remains unavailable, use the available H.265 or H.264 ingest option and its corresponding bitrate.

YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames

Test the connection while other expected devices and applications are in use. Check whether the measured upload headroom is adequate for the selected video bitrate plus audio and overhead. Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to help identify the problem; do not respond to every network warning by increasing bitrate.

Encoding overload or an unstable 4K60 output

Reduce competing GPU load and verify the game, capture, and output configuration. The RTX 4060’s NVENC capability is not a guarantee that a particular game scene and system setup can maintain 4K60. If the stream remains unstable after diagnosis, lower the output resolution or frame rate to a level the setup can sustain.

Audio or color does not match the intended stream

Verify audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and the SDR/HDR output path before going live. For SDR, use the Rec. 709, 8-bit recommendation. For HDR, use YouTube’s H.265/10-bit guidance rather than AV1.

4K low latency is not available

This is expected in YouTube’s stated guidance: the 4K low-latency improvement option is unavailable. Plan for normal latency for a 4K stream.
