If a scheduled YouTube gaming rerun still shows an old thumbnail, first confirm you are editing the correct scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Review its saved thumbnail, save any change, then check the public page again after allowing time for it to appear. YouTube says thumbnail changes can take time to show, but does not give a fixed delay or identify one specific cause for this symptom.
1. Select the scheduled stream you actually want to change
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room > Manage.
- Select the intended upcoming stream. Check its title and scheduled date before changing anything; several reruns can have similar names.
- Review the event’s saved details and thumbnail. Make sure you are not looking at an older live replay instead of the next scheduled stream.
YouTube Studio’s Live tab separates upcoming streams from live replays, so an image attached to one entry is not necessarily the image attached to another.
2. Check whether the new stream inherited the old thumbnail
If you created the scheduled event with YouTube’s Reuse settings option, inspect its metadata closely. YouTube says a reused stream copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. That can include details you meant to change for the new rerun, so verify the thumbnail on the new event rather than assuming it starts blank.
Also confirm that the event selected in Live Control Room is the new scheduled stream, not the previous broadcast’s replay.

3. Update and save the thumbnail on that event
Use the thumbnail control available for the selected stream type. YouTube’s general video-thumbnail instructions use this path: YouTube Studio > Content > select the video > Thumbnail > Upload file > Save. For a scheduled encoder or mobile live stream, YouTube says metadata can be edited from the stream settings page or while scheduling. The exact controls can vary by live workflow, so make the change on the event you selected in Live Control Room.
- Choose or upload the intended image in the selected event’s thumbnail control.
- Save the change.
- Reopen that same event and check whether Studio now displays the new image. This confirms what is saved on the item; it does not guarantee that every public YouTube surface has updated yet.

4. Verify the stream and the replay separately
Before the rerun starts
When your encoder connects, check that the expected stream preview appears in Live Control Room and that you are working with the intended scheduled event. YouTube’s live-stream guidance includes checking the preview before going live. This is useful for confirming the feed is connected to the expected event; it does not mean the encoder sets or controls the event’s thumbnail.
After the broadcast ends
Return to the Studio Content > Live area and identify the completed broadcast’s replay. If the upcoming event showed the right image but the archive does not, inspect and update the replay/video item itself. Changing the next scheduled stream will not necessarily change the thumbnail on an older replay.

5. Diagnose what you see

YouTube’s published guidance explains reused settings, thumbnail editing, and the distinction between upcoming streams and replays. It does not identify a definitive root cause for every report of a scheduled-stream thumbnail failing to update, so the checks above narrow down which item and display surface needs attention rather than presuming a platform bug, cache issue, or encoder fault.
