Start by checking the stream’s exact status and any errors in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that your encoder is running and sending a usable picture and sound; if the encoder cannot start, refresh the YouTube stream key and update the encoder. If the encoder output looks healthy, check your outbound internet connection. “Waiting for viewers” by itself does not identify a confirmed cause, so the right fix depends on what YouTube and your streaming setup show.
First, identify what “rerun” and “waiting for viewers” mean in your setup
“Rerun” might mean restarting a live broadcast, replaying an archived stream, or sending recorded gameplay as a new live stream. Those are different workflows, and the phrase “waiting for viewers” is not defined as a specific diagnosis in the reviewed YouTube Help pages or API documentation. Don’t assume that every case has the same cause.
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and note the exact status and any error message. Check whether YouTube is receiving stream data and whether the broadcast is scheduled, in preview, or live. The API describes states such as noData, meaning the backend has no information about stream health, and error, meaning the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. These defined states are more useful diagnostic clues than the reported phrase alone. Google’s LiveStreams API documentation describes the health statuses.

Read the Live Control Room status and errors
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the relevant broadcast. Record the exact status or error, whether stream data is arriving, and whether the broadcast is scheduled, previewing, or live. Don’t treat “waiting for viewers” as interchangeable with a YouTube API status.

If a third-party encoder failed to start, refresh the stream key
In Live Control Room, select Stream, copy the current stream key, and paste it into the encoder’s stream-key field. Start the encoder again and check whether YouTube receives data. If your software connects to YouTube by signing in and does not expose a stream-key field, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Check the encoder’s output and health
Update the encoder to its latest version. Inspect its preview for picture and sound problems, check its local recording if available, and look for encoder errors or high CPU load in its live dashboard. If the feed still looks wrong after those checks, try a different encoder. A faulty preview, recording, or overloaded encoder points to a source or encoding problem rather than a viewer-count issue.

If the encoder output is healthy, check the outbound connection
Run an internet connection speed test and look for connection problems. If the test indicates an issue, contact your internet service provider. A good-looking local preview does not by itself establish that the stream is reaching YouTube reliably.

Match the checks to how you stream gameplay
YouTube lists external encoders as a common way to stream gameplay. It also supports direct broadcasts from modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, as well as mobile and webcam streaming. The stream-key and encoder checks above apply to an external encoder; they may not match the setup for a console-native broadcast. Report a continuing issue with useful details
If the stream still does not become viewable, report the problem to YouTube. Include the exact Live Control Room status or error, your streaming method, the encoder name and version if applicable, what its preview showed, and the results of your connection check. YouTube’s troubleshooting page says: “If you continue to have issues with your live stream, let our team know.”
What not to infer from the message
- The phrase “waiting for viewers” alone is not an official root-cause diagnosis in the reviewed YouTube sources.
- Do not assume that waiting a fixed number of minutes will solve it. Google documents a 5–10 second transition in a particular broadcast lifecycle flow, but that is not a wait-time guarantee for this message. The broadcast lifecycle documentation describes that specific transition.
- Do not buy a router, capture card, cable, or other accessory based on the phrase alone. First establish whether the issue is in the source, encoder, stream-key setup, connection, or broadcast status.
