If FFmpeg still appears to be running but YouTube reports a disconnected or unhealthy stream, the process being alive does not prove that video is reaching YouTube. Check FFmpeg’s error log and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages at the same time, then isolate the encoder, RTMPS connection, network route, or YouTube stream state. The information in the title alone cannot identify the cause, and an Indian server location is not evidence of an India-specific problem.
Why FFmpeg can run after the YouTube stream disconnects
FFmpeg can keep executing while its output connection is no longer delivering a usable stream. A process monitor may show the job as active even if the connection to YouTube has failed, stalled, or been rejected. Confirm what is happening at both ends: inspect FFmpeg’s stderr for the disconnect and check the stream’s status and health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health.
Without the command line, complete error log, stream-health status, and network evidence, there is no basis to name one root cause. Possibilities include an incorrect or stale ingest URL or key, an RTMPS/TLS mismatch, outbound connectivity trouble, unsuitable encoder settings, or a YouTube stream-state issue. The server’s location in India is a hypothesis to test, not a diagnosis.
Work through the failure one layer at a time

Preserve the failure evidence
Before changing settings, save the complete FFmpeg command and stderr around the time of the disconnect. FFmpeg’s documentation describes
-report, which writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report file;-loglevelcan provide more detail. Record the time and compare it with the matching YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the intended live stream. Copy the current values into the encoder’s server and key fields, and check for an old key, typo, malformed path, or unintended destination. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where the server URL and key belong. Do not share the stream key publicly; treat it as a credential.

Check the full RTMPS connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for streaming. Its RTMPS ingestion guide specifies the protocol, valid ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, SSL/TLS, and correct hostname/SNI. Verify the exact URL and that the FFmpeg build and TLS behavior support the configured endpoint. A timeout can occur when an encoder attempts cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS; changing protocols or ports without checking the endpoint can obscure the actual fault.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance
Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include:
Output YouTube-recommended bitrate 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps These are YouTube’s published settings guidance, not measurements of disconnect frequency or a guarantee that a particular route will remain stable. Confirm that the VM can sustain the chosen upload bitrate to the actual ingest destination; its advertised network speed alone does not establish that.

Test outbound reachability and look for a pattern
From the VM, check DNS resolution and outbound reachability to the configured ingest hostname and port. Compare failure times with VM restarts, route changes, resource contention, or provider/network events. If you test from another route or provider, use it as a controlled comparison: note whether the endpoint, key, encoder settings, and stream state remain the same. The reviewed official sources do not establish that Indian cloud hosting generally causes YouTube encoder disconnects.

Interpret managed-service troubleshooting narrowly
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API troubleshooting guide lists issues for that managed service, including an invalid endpoint URI, an inactive channel, a duplicate encoder connection, and disallowed source IP ranges. Those checks may suggest questions to ask when diagnosing a managed ingest service, but they do not prove why YouTube rejected a stream sent directly from a particular FFmpeg VM.

Read the evidence before choosing a fix
- FFmpeg reports a destination or protocol error: Recheck the current YouTube URL and key, RTMPS scheme, path, port, TLS behavior, and hostname/SNI.
- YouTube reports an unhealthy stream while FFmpeg continues: The process is not proof of successful delivery. Match the health message and timestamp to FFmpeg’s log, then verify the output connection and encode settings.
- The stream disconnects at recurring times or after infrastructure changes: Compare the timestamps with VM restarts, route changes, provider events, and resource contention. Do not attribute the pattern to geography unless the tests support that conclusion.
- There is no clear error or repeatable pattern: Preserve the command, detailed logs, and stream-health messages, then change one variable at a time. Changing several settings together makes it harder to identify the failing layer.
