YouTube Create is a free phone app for editing Shorts and long-form videos. To use it, sign in on a supported phone, start a project, import clips or photos, edit them on the timeline, then export to your phone or upload to YouTube. Availability depends on your country and device; check those requirements before planning a project.
Who can use YouTube Create?
You need a Google sign-in and must be in a supported country or region. YouTube Help lists Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM, or iPhone XR and newer running iOS 17 or later. The app is described by YouTube as free and without ads. It is a phone editor, not a desktop editing application.
As listed by YouTube Help, supported locations are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Availability can change, so check YouTube’s YouTube Create available locations page and app store listing for your region.
How to make a video in YouTube Create
1. Install the app and sign in
Confirm that your phone and location meet the requirements above, install YouTube Create, and sign in with the Google account associated with the YouTube channel where you intend to publish.

2. Start a project and import media
- Open YouTube Create and tap the plus button.
- Choose photos or videos from your phone’s gallery, or import media from another app.
- Select one or more items and tap Import.
You can combine multiple photos and videos in a project. YouTube’s project help covers starting and managing projects.
3. Edit the timeline, text, and captions
Arrange your footage on the timeline, then add text or captions as needed. Text layers can use plain text or effects. You can edit the words; adjust size, font, color, background, formatting, outline, or shadow; animate the text; and drag it into position. A text layer can also be split so that separate portions can be edited independently. See YouTube’s text instructions for the controls.
For spoken content, Create can generate captions from speech or an in-app voiceover. Choose the voiceover language, review the generated words for errors, then edit and style the captions. The caption tool cannot generate captions for clips longer than 60 seconds, according to YouTube’s caption guidance. If a longer project needs captions, plan another captioning workflow rather than assuming the app will transcribe it.

4. Preview, export, or upload

This gives you a local file to keep or share elsewhere.
- Upload to YouTube: Upload directly from Create. The video is associated with the channel signed in within the app, so check the account and channel before publishing.
There is an important Shorts Audio Library distinction: YouTube Help says that when you save a local export longer than 15 seconds, Shorts Audio Library music is automatically removed. Direct upload through Create supports licensed music clips up to 60 seconds. Check the music and destination before choosing an export route; the two limits apply to different routes. Templates and experimental AI features
Templates
Templates provide ready-made structures for categories such as cooking, travel, and fashion. Browse the available templates, choose one, add gallery or imported media, select the portions of clips to use, then export or open the result in the full editor. The YouTube template guidance specifies Android with at least 4 GB of RAM; it does not establish template availability on iPhone. Details are in YouTube’s template instructions.

AI features
YouTube labels the AI tools experimental and says access is limited to selected creators and countries. Their presence in help documentation does not mean every Create user can use them. As listed by YouTube Help, Gemini Omni can generate vertical video clips up to 10 seconds from a prompt, optionally using reference images. Its listed locations are Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United States. Nano Banana image generation is listed for users over 18 in those same five locations; prompts may be in English or Hindi.
Edit with AI has a separate availability list: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Türkiye, and the United States. YouTube lists initial voiceover support in Bengali, English, Hindi, and Portuguese. These rollout details may change; check YouTube’s current AI feature information and your app before relying on a particular tool.

Back up projects before changing phones
YouTube warns that existing projects will be lost if you delete the app or get a new phone. Export completed videos to your device gallery before deleting Create or moving to another phone. Do not treat a project in the app as a backed-up video file.

If export fails
A complex project may exceed what a device can export reliably. YouTube suggests reducing the project’s load: remove overlapping video layers, stickers, effects, or transitions. If the problem continues, lower export quality from 1080p to 720p.
If upload fails or the video goes to the wrong channel
- Check the connection: Upload needs a strong internet connection. Retry on a more reliable network if it stalls or errors.
- Check the signed-in account: The app uploads to the channel signed in within YouTube Create. Confirm the account and channel before trying again.
- Keep a local copy: Export to the phone first if you need a device copy while diagnosing an upload problem.

Music available in an editing workflow is not a blanket license for every use or destination. Check the applicable music terms and the destination’s rules before publishing, and make sure you have rights to imported footage, music, and other material. The cited Create instructions do not establish that using the app by itself clears copyright or guarantees monetization. Likewise, editing a video in Create does not determine whether it complies with YouTube’s reused-content or other monetization policies; review the current YouTube policies for your channel and video.

Is YouTube Create the right editor?
Create is a practical option if you want to assemble phone footage, make timeline edits, add styled text or captions, and export or upload from a supported phone. Its limits matter if you need a desktop workflow, captions for clips over 60 seconds, a feature that has not rolled out to your account, or a particular music-use path. For documentary work, keep source footage and exported masters backed up separately from app projects.
If you are filming footage to import, a smartphone tripod can be an optional way to steady shots; it is not required by YouTube Create.
