YouTube 24/7 Stream Keeps Disconnecting With OBS Replay Buffer Enabled: How to Diagnose It

Replay Buffer being enabled does not prove it caused a YouTube disconnect. Check the OBS log, YouTube stream health, upload headroom, and a controlled off/on comparison.

OBS’s Replay Buffer is not documented as a cause of YouTube stream disconnections. OBS describes it as a recording feature; its connection guidance points instead to an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A disconnect that happens while Replay Buffer is enabled is a clue to test—not proof that the feature caused it.

To find the cause, note YouTube’s exact stream-health message, check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and log, verify upload capacity and encoder health, then compare otherwise identical runs with Replay Buffer off and on. This separates a network or ingest problem from an encoder/resource issue or a repeatable correlation with the buffer.

Does OBS Replay Buffer cause dropped frames or disconnects?

The official OBS documentation reviewed does not identify Replay Buffer as a cause of stream connection loss. OBS presents Replay Buffer as an Output/recording feature, and Advanced Output allows streaming and recording to be configured independently. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide says dropped frames indicate a connection problem and warns that enough dropped frames may end a connection to the streaming server. OBS Studio overview · OBS stream connection troubleshooting

That does not establish what is happening on a particular computer. Replay Buffer could coincide with a separate network or encoder problem; only logs and a controlled comparison can show whether the issue reliably tracks with the feature in your setup. Avoid treating the toggle alone as a diagnosis or a guaranteed fix.

Capture evidence before changing settings

Record the time of each interruption and the exact status or error shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Its stream-health indicators provide specific messages and guidance, which are more useful than guessing from the Replay Buffer setting. Save an OBS log covering the interruption, and note the dropped-frame counter and any encoder or CPU warnings. YouTube stream metrics · YouTube live stream troubleshooting

  • Check whether the local recording or archive remains intact and continues growing when YouTube disconnects. YouTube recommends reviewing a local archive to help assess output quality.
  • Note whether OBS reports dropped frames, encoding lag, or another problem. Connection drops and encoding problems point to different parts of the chain.
  • Keep the original log and settings for comparison. Change one variable at a time so an apparent improvement has diagnostic value.

Check upload capacity against your stream bitrate

Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube advises allowing 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a measurement of your actual connection. YouTube streaming tips

YouTube’s encoder guide lists these recommended H.264 bitrates; the figures are specific to the resolution and frame rate shown, not universal targets for every codec or connection. The guide’s publication year is not stated; its listed parameters were accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube encoder settings

Output mode YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

YouTube’s current guide recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, and warns not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose an output your real connection can sustain reliably, test before going live, and watch stream health rather than assuming a nominal speed-test result guarantees stability.

Isolate network, ingest, and encoder problems

OBS lists several possible sources of connection instability: Wi-Fi, VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, and network equipment such as routers, modems, switches, extenders, network cards, or cables. Where practical, test over wired Ethernet. OBS also recommends trying a different ingest server, lowering bitrate, or testing another service to help determine whether the destination or connection path is involved. OBS stream connection troubleshooting

If checking security software, do not leave it disabled. Use a temporary diagnostic test only if appropriate, re-enable protection, and add an OBS exception if the test indicates interference. YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence also recommends updating the encoder, checking dashboard errors and CPU load, reviewing a local archive, and testing outbound connectivity; if the encoder output appears healthy but connectivity tests do not, contact your internet provider. Test whether the Replay Buffer toggle changes the result

A controlled off/on comparison is a troubleshooting method, not an official OBS or YouTube prescribed fix. Keep the scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, ingest server, network path, and workload the same. Compare runs that are as similar as practical, and record the OBS log, dropped-frame counter, YouTube health message, and local archive behavior for each.

  1. Run a test with Replay Buffer disabled. Record the settings and observations listed above.
  2. Repeat under the same conditions with Replay Buffer enabled.
  3. If possible, repeat the pair. A single interruption or clean run can be coincidental.
  4. Compare the evidence. If the problem recurs only with Replay Buffer on, investigate the selected Output mode and relevant encoder/resource logs. Treat the repeatable difference as a lead about this setup, not proof of a general Replay Buffer defect.

If both runs disconnect in similar ways, prioritize the connection, bitrate headroom, ingest route, and YouTube health message. OBS’s documentation establishes that streaming and recording settings can be independent in Advanced Output, but the sources reviewed do not establish Replay Buffer’s resource impact on your particular machine.

Common symptoms and what to check next

Observation What it suggests Next check
OBS dropped frames rise before the disconnect The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Check upload capacity and 20% headroom, then test a lower bitrate or a different ingest server.
YouTube shows a specific stream-health error The dashboard has evidence tied to the stream rather than the Replay Buffer toggle. Record the exact message and follow its instructions; compare its time with the OBS log.
Encoder warnings or poor local recording quality appear The issue may involve encoding or system load, not only the network path. Inspect CPU load, update OBS, and review the local archive and encoder errors.
The local archive continues while YouTube ingest drops The recording path may be continuing despite loss of the live connection. Compare OBS connection and dropped-frame evidence with YouTube’s health message.
Only the Replay Buffer-on run repeatedly fails There is a setup-specific correlation worth investigating, but causation is not established. Repeat the controlled comparison and inspect Output mode and encoder/resource logs.

Keep a YouTube 24/7 stream running without an always-on home computer

For a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on. It streams to YouTube only and is not a camera-live service.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or prepare a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Start your free StreamNeo day.

Costs and capacity for a cloud alternative

Each StreamNeo slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Protect the channel and stream content you have rights to use

A technically stable stream can still face a copyright interruption or other YouTube policy issue. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including music, footage, and any material in a playlist; check YouTube’s stream-health messages for the actual cause rather than assuming every stop is a network disconnect. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the dashboard and reviewing the local archive as part of diagnosis. YouTube live stream troubleshooting
