YouTube publishes this as general live-encoder guidance; it does not specify a different bitrate for Indian classical music, India-based streams, or 24/7 broadcasts. Audio and video bitrates are separate settings.
Recommended audio settings for a stereo stream
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) |
These are YouTube Help’s published live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, rather than results from an independent sound-quality test. The guidance does not claim that 128 Kbps is uniquely optimal for Indian classical instruments or that increasing the bitrate will improve the audio viewers receive. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Does Indian classical music need a higher bitrate?
YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide a genre-specific setting. Use the general stereo recommendation above whether the stream features a raga recital, bhajan, instrumental performance, or another music program. A higher audio bitrate is not an established requirement for Indian classical music in the cited guidance.
For stereo, do not confuse the recommendation with YouTube’s separate 5.1 surround guidance: 5.1 is listed at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz, and YouTube says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. That setting is not necessary for a stereo music stream.

Set video bitrate separately
Choose video settings according to the video codec, resolution, and frame rate; the audio figure does not determine them. YouTube’s live-ingestion table lists different video recommendations for different profiles. For example, its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are video figures, not audio bitrates, and neither is a universal requirement across codecs or profiles.
A stream using static artwork may not need the same video profile as a performance with substantial movement, but YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate table for still-image or music-only streams. Match the selected resolution and frame rate to your encoder and the upload connection you can sustain.

Configure and test the encoder before going live
- Choose a supported protocol and video profile. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm your encoder supports the protocol and codec combination you select.
- Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Set audio independently. For stereo, configure AAC or MP3, CBR, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test and choose video settings the connection can reliably sustain; avoid setting a profile based only on a brief peak speed.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned program. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with audio and movement like those in the stream.
- Monitor stream health. During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages so you can identify ingestion or connection problems.

Account for rights before a continuous music broadcast
Encoder settings do not establish that you have permission to broadcast particular compositions, performances, or sound recordings, or to keep an archive of the stream. Confirm the rights for the specific music and recordings you plan to use before broadcasting; the technical settings guidance does not resolve those rights questions.
