For a simple 24/7 YouTube stream, use a capable Windows PC if you already have one and can rely on its power and home internet. Choose a VPS only when remote hosting solves a real need—and after verifying that the specific plan can encode your stream and support its ongoing outbound traffic. Neither option is automatically cheaper or more reliable. The choice depends on your workload, internet route, recovery plan, and the time you can spend maintaining it.
Windows PC vs. VPS: what changes?
With either setup, an encoder such as OBS sends the stream from the machine running it to YouTube. OBS does not relay the stream through its own servers; the encoder machine’s connection and configuration matter. A Windows PC is physically at home, with direct access to local files and peripherals. A VPS is a remotely administered virtual machine hosted away from home.

There is no sourced head-to-head benchmark establishing comparative uptime, cost, or performance for home PCs and VPS plans. Both need sound configuration and a way to respond to interruptions.
Choose by workload and operating needs
An existing PC and a straightforward loop
If you have a capable PC, stable home internet, and a simple pre-recorded loop, start by testing that setup. It is often the more straightforward option to inspect and troubleshoot because the machine is physically accessible. Confirm that you are comfortable leaving it powered on and managing updates, cooling, restarts, and the encoder.

Remote hosting or unreliable home infrastructure
A VPS is worth evaluating if the stream needs to run away from home—for example, because you cannot leave a computer there or the home connection is unsuitable. Before paying, get clear answers from the provider about sustained encoding capability, outbound traffic terms, operating system and remote access, and how you can recover access after a failure. Moving the stream off-site does not itself guarantee uninterrupted service.
Gameplay, overlays, or demanding scenes
Animated overlays, multiple scenes, effects, and high frame rates can require more encoding capacity than a static loop. That workload depends on your scene and encoder settings, not simply whether the host is called a PC or VPS. Test the actual stream configuration on the exact machine or plan you intend to use; the platform’s ingest bitrate recommendations are not hardware benchmarks.

Low-motion or ambient video
A simple, low-motion scene may be less demanding than gameplay with effects, but there is no quantified resource estimate here. Do not assume a VPS or ordinary PC will handle your exact setup without testing it.
Set the stream and test the real connection
YouTube’s guidance for H.264 gives the following recommended ingest bitrates. These are YouTube platform settings, not measurements of any PC, VPS, or internet plan. The figures below are for H.264; do not substitute them for another codec’s recommendations.

For H.264, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Your upload connection needs stable headroom above the stream bitrate; a speed-test result equal to the target bitrate leaves no room for normal variation. Test the connection from the host that will send the stream, not from a different device or location.
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current Help page also states a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Configure the encoder for your intended stream. Select the resolution, frame rate, H.264 bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval appropriate to your stream. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Test before going public. Run a pre-live test that includes the kind of audio and motion your actual broadcast will have. A still screen is not a useful substitute for testing a moving documentary clip, gameplay, or animated overlays.
- Watch stream health while live. Check YouTube’s health indicator and messages rather than assuming a successful start means the connection will remain stable. YouTube’s current encoder settings and testing advice are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Keep a 24/7 stream maintainable
An always-on broadcast needs more than an encoder setting. Decide who or what will notice a failed stream, how you will regain control of the host, and what you will do after a restart. On a home PC, include power and router recovery in that plan. On a VPS, confirm remote access and provider recovery procedures before relying on them.

For OBS, dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed as a general troubleshooting point—not as a guarantee or YouTube rule. Lowering bitrate or enabling OBS dynamic bitrate may reduce quality during congestion; dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying network issue. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Start with a Windows PC if you already have suitable hardware, a stable home connection, and the ability to maintain the machine. Evaluate a VPS if you specifically need remote hosting, but verify encoding, traffic, administration, and recovery details for the exact plan. Test either setup with your real stream before relying on it around the clock.
