“Fanum tax” is a playful term for taking a bite or a share of someone else’s food. “Skibidi” has no single agreed definition. It works as a nonsense internet reference tied to a 2023 TikTok parody, and its origin is disputed. Both words are context-dependent slang, so their meaning depends on who is using them and where.

What “Fanum tax” means

In its most common usage, “Fanum tax” describes the small share of food that one person takes from another’s plate, usually as a joke. The phrase is named after the streamer Fanum, who was known for taking bites of food during streams with fellow creators. Because the gesture is light and friendly, the term is used for anything similar: a cheeky grab from a friend’s fries, or a playful claim on someone’s snack.

Fanum’s own explanation

Fanum has described the idea as taking a small slice of a friend’s meal rather than demanding anything large. In an interview with WIRED, as reported second-hand, he framed it as wanting “a little bit of 5%, 10% of the meal, maybe 20%.” The original interview was not checked word for word for this article, so treat that phrasing as a reported paraphrase rather than a verified quote.

How the term spread beyond food

Once a phrase is shared widely online, it often stops referring to its original context. “Fanum tax” is now used as a general joke for any small, cheeky claim on something that belongs to someone else, including attention, a seat, or a turn at something. This broader use is informal and playful. It does not have the fixed meaning of a dictionary entry, and people may stretch it in different directions.

Where “Skibidi” comes from

“Skibidi” is best understood as an internet culture reference rather than a word with a stable definition. Reporting on its origins has pointed to several competing explanations. CBC Kids has covered three proposed origin stories, but the specifics of those accounts were not verified for this article, so they are not repeated here. The honest conclusion is that no single origin is firmly established.

The 2023 TikTok parody and the wider mashup

The phrase “You’re so Skibidi” belongs to a broader mashup of slang that also includes “gyatt,” “rizz,” and “sigma.” Polygon reported on this mashup as an October 2023 TikTok parody. Polygon’s reporting gave the parody sound more than 195,000 videos and 321 million views on TikTok. These are historical counts from 2023, reported second-hand, and they should not be read as current platform totals.

Fanum tax and Skibidi compared

The two terms work differently. One has a concrete meaning that can be explained in a sentence. The other works mainly as a reference to a meme.

Term Typical meaning Basis for the meaning How settled the meaning is
Fanum tax Playfully taking or sharing some of someone else’s food, and by extension any small cheeky claim Linked to streamer Fanum’s bites of food during streams, and his own described explanation (second-hand report from WIRED) Relatively clear in its food-sharing sense; the broader meme use is looser
Skibidi Nonsense internet reference used in the “You’re so Skibidi” mashup Associated with a 2023 TikTok parody; several origin stories have been reported (CBC Kids) Not settled; no single definition or origin is firmly established

How to read these terms in the wild

When you meet one of these words, a few checks will usually tell you more than a definition list:

  • Look at the setting. A food joke in a stream or a short video usually points to the Fanum sense.
  • Notice whether the speaker is joking. Most of this vocabulary is deliberately absurd, so literal readings often miss the point.
  • Check the date. Slang that peaked in 2023 may have shifted meaning or faded by the time you encounter it.
  • Do not assume everyone uses these words the same way. Meaning varies by community, platform, and region.

For “Skibidi” in particular, the safest approach is to treat it as a meme reference and let the surrounding joke explain it.
