In Col. Michael Underkofler’s recollection of his small-town childhood, that contrast could provoke a fight because boys expected mothers and grandmothers to be domestic and conventionally feminine—not warriors. That is his account of a particular place and time, not a universal explanation or a verified origin story.
Why did the phrase work as an insult?
It attacked someone’s mother
Underkofler recalled that disparaging someone’s mother was considered impolite and could bring consequences at home or on the playground. The taunt was aimed at the person being teased through a put-down of their mother, making it more provocative than an ordinary jab.
It challenged a local ideal of femininity
In his account, boys in his hometown pictured mothers and grandmothers as domestic, conventionally feminine figures. Combat boots suggested a woman prepared for the role of a warrior, in contrast to that expectation. The gendered sting depended on this remembered local norm; it should not be treated as the phrase’s meaning everywhere.
Underkofler described the line as a last-resort comeback after being physically or verbally pummeled. The April 6, 2012, Robins Rev-Up essay preserves his recollection and interpretation.

How did the phrase’s meaning change?
A 2006 Army publication described a more positive reading: mothers serving in the Army wore combat boots, so the old playground insult could be reclaimed as a compliment. The Army’s June 2006 publication summarizes a Spring 2006 INSCOM Journal article making that case.
The contrast is between a remembered playground insult and a later military reframing. The sources document that change in framing, but they do not show that everyone adopted the compliment or that the phrase carried a single meaning across generations.

What can—and can’t—be said about its history?
The available accounts support an explanation of why the phrase could sting in Underkofler’s remembered setting and how an Army publication later reclaimed it. They do not establish when or where it was first used, how widely it circulated, or whether it meant the same thing in every community. No relevant statistic on its popularity or prevalence is established in these sources.
Claims that it referred to sex work, sexuality, poverty, wartime boot exchanges, or a Japanese-language origin are not established by these accounts. Nor do they establish a connection to the “your mom goes to college” joke from Napoleon Dynamite.
