At Eugene’s trial for Adam’s murder, Michael identifies Eugene as the shooter. When pressed, Michael also reveals the truth behind the events that began the chain of tragedy: Adam’s fatal hit-and-run of Rocco Baxter, Michael’s cover-up, and Kofi Jones being blamed. The disclosure corrects the account of what happened to Kofi, while exposing Michael’s own part in the damage.
Michael also gives his lawyer information about the Jones family home explosion that points away from an accidental gas leak and renews suspicion around the Baxters. Eugene is allowed to leave for a new life under witness protection. In a private exchange, Michael and Eugene apologize to one another for their losses.

Fia learns the truth about Adam’s role in Rocco’s death and the lies within her family. She gives baby Rocco up for adoption and leaves New Orleans. Meanwhile, Gina outmaneuvers her father, Carmine, and Jimmy. Carmine shoots Jimmy and is arrested; Gina is left in control of the Baxter operation. Jimmy survives and is shown in hospital, leaving his future unresolved.
Why does Michael go back to prison?
Michael returns to prison because he stops evading responsibility for the cover-up and its consequences. His testimony does more than identify Eugene as Adam’s shooter: under questioning, he discloses how he protected Adam after the hit-and-run and how Kofi was made to take the blame. The final image reads as Michael accepting that he must face judgment rather than continue protecting the lie.
Rank #2
The series’ legal mechanics are less specific than that moral turn. Netflix Tudum’s recap says Michael begins season 2 in custody for his involvement in ensuring Carlo’s acquittal of Kofi’s murder, then is released to help a federal prosecutor pursue the Baxters. The finale coverage describes his return to prison, but does not establish a precise sentence or detail every charge or step in the process. It is therefore safer to say he returns to custody than to claim a particular term of imprisonment.
What happens to each character?
| Character | Finale outcome | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Desiato | Tells the truth about Adam and his own cover-up, then returns to prison. | His emotional arc reaches accountability, though the legal outcome is not specified. |
| Eugene Jones | Gets a chance to leave under witness protection. | He has a path to safety, not proof that every consequence has been resolved. |
| Fia Baxter | Gives baby Rocco up for adoption and leaves New Orleans. | She breaks from the lies surrounding both families, but her future remains open. |
| Gina Baxter | Comes to control the Baxter operation after Carmine shoots Jimmy and is arrested. | Power changes hands; the finale does not show the criminal operation ending. |
| Jimmy Baxter | Survives and is shown in hospital. | His next steps are left uncertain. |
| Kofi Jones | The revelations expose the wrongful blame placed on him and the harm to his family. | The truth is corrected, but it cannot undo the deaths. |
Is justice served in the ending?
That depends on what counts as justice. The finale distinguishes between telling the truth, accepting individual consequences, and repairing the wider damage. By those measures, its answer is mixed.

- Truth: Michael reveals Adam’s role in Rocco’s death and his own concealment, correcting the story that had made Kofi the culprit.
- Individual accountability: Michael returns to prison, and Eugene is offered protection and a way to leave.
- Systemic justice: The ending does not show all the damage repaired or the Baxter criminal structure dismantled. Gina takes over, Jimmy is alive, and Fia’s future is unresolved.
So the finale provides moral closure for Michael, but not a complete reckoning for everyone affected. The distinction fits Bryan Cranston’s description of the show’s moral question: “I believe that a person’s character is determined by the decisions they make under pressure,” he told Netflix Tudum in its June 18, 2024 article. His comment frames the series’ concern with choices; it does not settle every legal or personal outcome in the finale.

Michael’s return to prison closes the question of whether he will keep running from his part in the tragedy: he will not. It does not close every other story. The finale leaves Jimmy’s recovery and future uncertain, places Gina at the head of the Baxter operation, and sends Fia away without showing what comes next. That is why the ending feels like an ending for Michael’s moral arc rather than a full resolution of the world around him.
