Yes, Jon Hamm’s performance is the strongest reason to watch Your Friends & Neighbors, and it is a reasonable case for calling it his best work. Whether it is his best role is a judgment, not a settled fact. Critics who have reviewed the series find Hamm compelling and the show entertaining, but they disagree about how well it holds together, especially in its second season. This is a scripted dark comedy-drama rather than a documentary, so the questions below focus on performance, tone, and execution.
What the show is about
Apple describes the series around Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Hamm), a recently divorced hedge fund manager who is fired and begins stealing from his wealthy neighbors in Westmont Village to keep his family’s lifestyle intact. The thefts pull him into the secrets and affairs hidden behind the neighborhood’s polished surface. Apple classifies it as drama with crime-driven tension and dark comedy that satirizes privilege and suburban life (Apple TV series information).
The premise is a useful lens for the performance question. Coop is not a conventional hero. He starts as a man protecting his status and becomes a thief, so the show depends on the audience staying with a character whose choices get worse over time.
The official cast list includes Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Lee, Mark Tallman, Isabel Gravitt, Donovan Colan, Aimee Carrero, Eunice Bae, Lena Hall, and James Marsden. Jonathan Tropper is the creator and showrunner and also writes, directs, and executive-produces. Apple Studios is the studio (Apple TV Press listing).

Testing the “best work” claim
The claim is easier to evaluate if you break it into the things an actor has to do in this role. Three dimensions matter most.

Comic timing
TechRadar’s review of season one praises Hamm’s dry, sarcastic humor and describes the show as a mix of drama, comedy, and mystery. Dry delivery depends on restraint. A character who reacts a beat late, or who says something cutting while looking composed, carries the comedy without a punchline. This is the strongest argument for Hamm’s case, because the show’s satire of wealth often works through Coop’s deadpan reactions to people who take their own status too seriously.
The Tool Desk

Comedy is only part of the test. A character who steals from neighbors and lies to his family has to show damage underneath the wit. The reviews available for this article do not single out specific scenes for this, so the judgment rests on whether the drama lands for you. Look for whether Coop’s moments of regret or panic feel earned rather than played for a laugh.
Sustaining sympathy for a compromised character
This is the hardest of the three. As Coop’s moral compromises grow, the audience has to keep investing in him. The show’s own framing points that way. Tropper has said he was interested in “the status symbols, about the way wealth informs community,” and that he wanted to “subvert it a little bit and talk about how impermanent it all is” (Associated Press interview, April 9, 2025, read the interview). Hamm, in the same interview, asked: “Why is more always better?” Those statements describe the show’s intent. Whether it succeeds at keeping Coop watchable is a question each viewer answers.

Where the critics split
Two published reviews show the range of opinion. Neither is a consensus.
Season one: engaging, not a masterpiece
TechRadar’s review, which its author wrote after initially dismissing the show over its Rotten Tomatoes score, calls the series engaging and praises Hamm, but stops short of calling it a masterpiece. The article cites a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score as the reviewer’s reference at publication in 2025. That figure is a snapshot from that time, not a current score, so check the aggregator directly before relying on it (TechRadar review).
Season two: frequently captivating, unevenly balanced
The Daily Beast’s season-two review says the show struggles to balance its intertwined storylines, though it remains frequently captivating. That is the most direct counterpoint to the “best work” argument. A performance can be the strongest element of a show without the show being consistent around it. Read it as a warning about execution, not a dismissal of Hamm (The Daily Beast season-two review).

How well the show executes its ideas
If you want to judge the series beyond Hamm, use these checks while you watch:
- Tone consistency: Does the show move between crime thriller, marital drama, and satire without one mode undercutting the others?
- Pacing: Do the mysteries and affairs keep moving, or do the middle episodes feel like they are marking time?
- Supporting characters: Do the neighbors have their own stakes, so the satire lands on more than Coop’s reactions?
- Thematic depth: Does the satire of wealth and impermanence develop past the premise, or does it stay at the level of the setting?
The season-two criticism above points to the first and fourth items. A viewer who finds season one’s tone and pacing strong may still find season two uneven, and both reactions are consistent with the published reviews.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this Jon Hamm’s best role?
The available evidence supports a narrower claim than the headline. Hamm’s comic control and his ability to make a self-absorbed character watchable are well supported by the reviews. Those are the qualities that make the case. What the evidence does not establish is a ranking of his roles. No consensus comparison against his earlier work was found, so any “best role” conclusion is the reviewer’s own view. If you think his restraint and irony carry the series through its weaker stretches, the case is strong. If you think the show’s inconsistency undercuts him, the case is weaker.
