Adult performers say age-verification laws and restrictions on mainstream social platforms have made it harder to reach fans, promote new work and earn a living. Most of them are not leaving the industry. They are shifting between studio work and self-published content and absorbing the costs of each move. That is the central picture in WIRED’s May 13, 2025 reporting by Manisha Krishnan, filed from the seventh annual Pornhub Awards in West Hollywood. The figures below were reported as of that date. The legal situation has continued to change, so this article separates what was reported from what remains open.
What the reporting covers, and what it cannot show
Krishnan interviewed performers, including Asa Akira, Queenie Sateen and Natassia Dreams, and spoke with Alex Kekesi, Pornhub’s vice president of brand and community. The piece also addresses sex education, trans representation and the platform’s trust-and-safety claims. Its evidence is a set of interviews gathered around a single awards event. It is not a survey of adult performers, and it does not contain market-wide income data. Read the individual accounts as first-hand experience, not as measurements of the industry.
How age verification reaches performers’ work
Age-verification requirements affect performers in two ways: they change whether audiences can reach a platform at all, and they change whether performers can promote work on the platforms that remain. WIRED reported that Pornhub content was unavailable in at least 17 states at the time of publication. It also reported that Arizona’s House had passed a bill that would make Arizona the 21st state to pass a similar measure since Louisiana began the trend in 2022. That bill was awaiting further action when the reporting was published.
Akira described the promotional consequence directly: “It’s hard to sell sex when you can’t promote it on any type of mainstream platform.” Her point concerns marketing, not only access. A performer can have a product and still lose the channels that build an audience for it.

The 80 percent traffic figure
Kekesi told WIRED that traffic to Pornhub fell 80 percent after Louisiana’s age-verification process took effect, and she attributed the drop to users not wanting to provide identification. That is a company executive’s figure. The reporting does not include an independent measurement of it, and it should be read as Pornhub’s account of its own traffic.
Platform rules and promotion
The reporting names Pornhub, OnlyFans and Instagram as platforms that shape access, self-publishing and promotion. Their current policies and availability were not established by the reporting, and they may have changed since May 2025. Performers’ concern is that rules written for the whole internet are enforced in ways that narrow where adult work can be discussed or sold.

Studio work and self-published work
Performers described a trade-off rather than a clear winner. Studio work offers payment on the day of the shoot. Self-publishing lets a performer keep a larger share of revenue from direct publishing, but the performer also carries the work of reaching an audience. The reporting gives individual accounts of these trade-offs. It provides no standardized earnings or sample data, so it does not support ranking either path as generally more profitable.
| Axis | Studio work | Self-published work |
|---|---|---|
| Compensation structure | Payment on the day of the shoot, per performer accounts | Larger retained share from direct publishing, per performer accounts |
| Control over content and audience | Not quantified in the reporting | Performer publishes directly and manages the audience relationship |
| Promotional reach | Not stated in the reporting | Depends on platforms that restrict adult promotion, per Akira |
| Dependence on platform rules | Not stated in the reporting | High exposure to platform policy, given the platforms named in the reporting |
| Audience-building effort | Not quantified in the reporting | Performer carries promotion and audience growth |
Trust, safety and the 2023 Aylo agreement
What the reporting says the government required
WIRED reported that Aylo, Pornhub’s Canadian parent company, agreed in 2023 with the US government to a three-year independent monitor and financial penalties. That agreement is the reporting’s main independent check on the platform’s safety claims, and it is a government agreement, not a finding about every practice the company uses.

What the company says it has changed
Pornhub describes stronger identity and release verification and improved moderation. These are company claims as reported in May 2025. They are not an independent audit, and the reporting does not confirm that they remain in place. Kekesi urged government and technology companies to “collaborate and work together on an effective solution,” a call that does not specify what that solution would be.

Sex education
Akira argued that “If we had better sex ed, young people would not look to porn as education.” This is her view as quoted in the piece. It is not a sourced finding on how young people use pornography or what sex education would change, and it should be read as one performer’s position.

Trans representation
Dreams said, “They want to keep a trans woman as that little dirty secret.” That is her account of how trans performers are treated in the industry. The reporting includes no named dataset on trans-porn viewership or representation, so her statement cannot be generalized into a measured pattern.

What remains open
- Current state restrictions. The 17-state figure and the 21st-state count describe May 2025. Check each state’s current law before relying on either.
- The Arizona bill. Its outcome after May 2025 is not established here.
- The Texas case. WIRED reported that the Supreme Court was reviewing a Texas age-verification case. The reporting predates any decision, so consult the court’s own opinion for the outcome.
- Federal proposals. Lawmakers introduced federal proposals in May 2025. Their status since then is not established here.
- Platform policies. Current rules and availability for Pornhub, OnlyFans and Instagram are not established by the reporting.
- Market effects. No verified market-wide earnings data or study of how often censorship reduces income is available in the reporting.
How to check a claim about censorship and performer income
- Confirm the date. A figure reported in 2025 may describe a law, platform or court position that has since changed.
- Separate company statements from independent measurement. Traffic and verification figures from a platform are its own account until a third party confirms them.
- Separate individual testimony from population-level evidence. A performer’s account of lost income is real experience, but it is not a sample of the industry.
- Check the jurisdiction. Age-verification rules vary by state and country, and a single “Pornhub is blocked” statement may refer to one state or one date.
