Steel questioned him about a disputed June 10 meeting with the judge and prosecutors, his earlier police interviews, the 2015 killing of Donovan “Nut” Thomas, a Young Thug lyric, and Copeland’s own murder charge. FOX 5 Atlanta described the day as the trial’s 119th. Copeland’s account included claims that he had lied to police in 2015; prosecutors maintained that those earlier interviews were truthful. The reporting below is drawn from news accounts of that day and from later coverage, not from an official transcript.
What happened on August 27, 2024
The state finished its questioning of Copeland on Monday, Aug. 26, and Steel began cross-examination the next day. Steel’s questions covered four areas: the June 10 meeting, Copeland’s police interviews, the Thomas killing, and Copeland’s own charges and plea history. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Copeland gave short answers and often said he did not recall events, and that Steel moved between the state’s exhibits and Copeland’s prior statements throughout the day.
The June 10 meeting
Steel opened by asking about a June 10 ex parte meeting involving then-presiding Judge Ural Glanville, prosecutors, Copeland, and his attorney. Atlanta News First, which published excerpts from the meeting transcript, identifies the attendees as Judge Glanville, prosecutors Adriane Love and Simone Hylton, Copeland, and attorney Kayla Bumpus, who was acting for Copeland while his regular lawyer was absent.
The meeting matters for the cross-examination because of how Copeland came to testify. He first took the stand on June 7, 2024, and initially invoked the Fifth Amendment. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that he was taken into custody after refusing to testify, and that the June 10 meeting and the dispute around it led defense attorneys to seek the removal of the original judge.

Steel’s position, as FOX 5 summarized it, was that Copeland agreed to testify because he felt threatened by the state. Copeland gave little response on that point, and Steel moved on to the prior interviews the state had played. Copeland’s own words from the meeting, as published by Atlanta News First, read: “I want to speak to you personally that I have never been truthful a day in my life until I just made this statement right now.” That remark comes from the June 10 meeting, not from the Aug. 27 testimony.
The Donovan Thomas questions and the car allegation
Steel asked about Young Thug, whose legal name is Jeffery Williams, and about the alleged involvement of Williams in the January 2015 murder of Donovan Thomas. FOX 5 reports that Williams was said to have rented a car used in the killing. That is an allegation described in news coverage, not a finding made in the case by that report or by any ruling referenced in it.

Steel also asked Copeland about the “Halftime” lyric, which refers to Woody. Copeland said the lyric was not true, according to FOX 5.
Copeland’s 2015 police interviews
Steel played excerpts of interviews the state had introduced and asked Copeland what he had told police shortly after Thomas was killed. Copeland said he had been told that Thomas and his friends planned to harm him that day.

Copeland’s account
Copeland repeatedly testified that he had lied during a series of six interviews, according to the AJC’s account published Sept. 3, 2024. FOX 5 describes him as often answering “I don’t recall,” or saying that he lied in 2015 to stay out of trouble. Copeland’s own description of his courtroom demeanor, as quoted by the AJC, was: “I’m testifying here by force.”
The prosecution’s position
Prosecutors argued that the earlier interviews were truthful. The disagreement between Copeland’s account and the state’s position is the central credibility dispute of this part of the cross-examination, and it is reported as a dispute, not resolved in the coverage reviewed.

Copeland’s own charge
Steel confronted Copeland with the fact that he had himself been charged with Thomas’s murder about four months after the 2015 interrogation. FOX 5 reports that Copeland acknowledged being told of the charge and said he did not know whether Williams had also been charged. Steel also reviewed Copeland’s charges, plea deals, and convictions.
On the previous day, Aug. 26, the state had played more police interviews and jail calls. In those questions, Copeland was quoted by FOX 5 as saying: “No disrespect to you, but Ms. Hylton, you are running my nerves through the roof,” followed by “I keep telling you, leave me alone.” Those lines were from the earlier day’s questioning, not from the Aug. 27 cross-examination.

What the reporting establishes, and what it does not
The Aug. 27 account is pieced together from news reports and a video listing. No complete certified transcript of the cross-examination was available in the coverage reviewed, so direct quotations in this article are limited to wording that a named outlet printed.

Two points are worth keeping separate when reading any account of this trial. First, the allegations about the Thomas killing and the rented car come from the prosecution’s case and from reporters describing it. Second, Copeland’s statements that he lied to police are his own testimony, and the state disputes them. Neither is established as a fact by these reports.
This article covers the events of Aug. 27, 2024, based on coverage from that period and from the AJC’s September 2024 retrospective. It does not track rulings, verdicts, or other developments after those dates.
