Lance Barber appeared twice in Young Sheldon’s fictional funeral for George Cooper: first as George in the open casket, then in disguise as a mourner named Georgina. The brief background cameo was planned—not a real-world event or an improvised interruption—and grew out of a running cast joke that also helped lighten a difficult day on set.
Where Lance Barber appears in the funeral episode
The cameo is in Season 7, Episode 13, “Funeral,” the penultimate episode of Young Sheldon. George’s death brings the Cooper family and their community together for the service. Barber plays George in the open casket, then reappears among the mourners in a white wig, spectacles and purple dress as Georgina, a fictional relative. TVLine notes that Georgina is a brief, background appearance, so viewers can miss her on a first watch. TVLine’s report on the cameo identifies both appearances.

Why Barber disguised himself as Georgina
A running joke about George’s “sister”
Barber told TVLine that he and castmates Zoe Perry, Annie Potts and the younger actors had joked that, after George died, he could return to the show as one of George’s sisters—“Georgette” or “Georgina.” A producer suggested the funeral shoot as the moment to make the joke real. The crew found a wig and costume, and Barber joined the congregation. The idea was not that Barber would disrupt a take: he joked, “I’m going to ruin so many takes,” but ultimately played the scenes straight. Barber’s account of the cameo describes how the gag moved from an on-set joke to a visual Easter egg.
A small lift during an emotional shoot
The disguise also offered a brief morale break during a demanding shoot. Barber said the funeral day was emotionally difficult and marked the end of seven years working together. He described lying in the casket with tears in his ears, saying, “I laid there and [had] tears in my ears the entire time. It hit me pretty hard.”

Co-showrunner Steve Holland said Barber wanted to be in the casket and had a fart machine to ease the mood when needed. Holland said filming the church funeral scenes took two days or a little more. The prankish props and Georgina cameo belong to the production’s effort to get through a heavy day; they do not mean the episode treats the Coopers’ grief as a gag.
Why the joke stays separate from the episode’s grief
Holland said the creative team wanted George’s death and its effect on the family to have proper weight. When lighter material began to feel wrong in the edit, they removed it. As Holland put it, “You can’t treat this glibly.” That tonal choice is why Georgina works as a quiet background Easter egg: the laugh comes from spotting Barber in disguise, while the scene remains centered on the family’s loss.
