The Young Sheldon finale sends Sheldon to Caltech after George’s death, while adult Sheldon revisits his childhood in a memoir. Executive producer Steve Holland said the ending is built around Sheldon’s grief and his belated recognition of his parents’ support. The professor who meets him at Caltech is science consultant David Saltzberg—a private Easter egg honoring his work on the show.
How the finale ends
The series finale aired as a two-episode event. “Funeral” centers on George Sr.’s funeral; “Memoir” follows Sheldon as he prepares to leave for Caltech and returns to adult Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, writing about his family. Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro and Steve Holland wrote the finale, directed by Michael Judd, according to Paramount Press Express.
George’s last ordinary departure for work becomes the moment Sheldon replays after his father dies. There is no grand farewell: Sheldon imagines what he might have said, and the absence of a dramatic goodbye makes the everyday moment carry the weight of his regret. Holland told TheWrap that the choice was intentional.
What the ending means, according to Steve Holland
The memoir frame shows adult Sheldon looking back at parents he had criticized and reconsidering what he understood about them. Holland said that criticism may reflect regret or serve as a defense mechanism. Sheldon’s recollections miss what Holland called “the most obvious point entirely”: his parents did not understand him, but they were there for him.

Amy helps Sheldon see that support. The present-day scene also asks him to attend their son’s hockey game, linking Sheldon’s relationship with his own children to the care he received from George and Mary. Holland described the final note as “a nice, sweet, uplifting moment to leave it on.”
Who is the professor at Caltech?
The professor who asks Sheldon whether he is lost is David Saltzberg, the science consultant who worked on both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. Holland told TheWrap that the casting was “our little private easter egg,” a way to acknowledge Saltzberg’s contribution to the character over 16 years. That duration is Holland’s description, not an independently measured figure.

The cameo is a nod to the people behind the series, not a new plot clue. Holland said the team considered using a famous scientist but wanted the moment to remain focused on Sheldon. Saltzberg’s appearance makes the Caltech scene an affectionate production-world acknowledgment.

Holland told TV Insider that the future scenes were not assigned a precise year. He estimated that Sheldon and Amy’s children were about 10 to 12 years old, placing the scenes roughly that far after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019. That is Holland’s estimate; the finale does not state an exact date.
