Young Scooter, the Atlanta rapper born Kenneth Bailey, died of a penetrating injury to his right thigh that caused marked blood loss. The Fulton County Medical Examiner ruled the death accidental, according to the finding The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on April 2, 2025. He died on March 28, 2025, his 39th birthday, after police said he appeared to hurt his leg while fleeing officers in southeast Atlanta. The AJC reported that the injury was not a gunshot wound.
What the Medical Examiner determined
The official cause and manner of death were first reported on April 2, 2025, when The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published the Medical Examiner’s findings. Those findings are the only official determination reported in the coverage reviewed. The AJC attributes them to the Medical Examiner’s Office; no verbatim statement from the office itself appeared in the reporting reviewed.
Cause of death
The cause was a penetrating injury to the right thigh that caused marked blood loss. “Cause of death” describes the physical injury and the mechanism that led to the death. It is distinct from how the death is classified, which is the next item.
Manner of death
The death was ruled accidental. In medicolegal practice, “manner of death” is a classification of how a death occurred, such as accident, homicide, suicide, natural causes, or undetermined. It is not a finding of fault or a statement about anyone’s intent. Reporting on this case uses the accidental ruling only in that classification sense.

What the injury was not
The AJC reported that the injury was not a gunshot wound. That point matters because early public discussion could easily assume otherwise, and it is the only specific description of the wound’s nature in the official finding as reported. Coverage also quotes Atlanta Police homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith saying, “The injury that was sustained was not via the officers on scene.” That is a police statement, reported by the AJC on March 29, 2025. It addresses who caused the injury in the police account; the cause and manner determination itself belongs to the Medical Examiner.
How the injury happened, according to police
The sequence of events comes from police reporting relayed by the AJC and Atlanta News First, not from an independently witnessed reconstruction. Police said Bailey fled after officers responded to a reported disturbance at a home in southeast Atlanta. Police said he jumped two fences and appeared to injure his leg in the process. He was treated at the scene and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Smith also told the AJC, “It was when the male was fleeing,” placing the injury during the flight rather than during contact with officers. The AJC’s April 2 headline describes the injury as a cut from a wood fence. That description comes from the headline, and it is the most specific account of the wound’s source in the coverage reviewed. It is not presented as a separate finding by the Medical Examiner.

Why some early reports said the cause was unknown
Articles published on March 28 and updated on March 29, 2025 say the official cause had not been released, and they remain accurate for that date. Searches for the cause may still surface those versions. The April 2, 2025 report is the first in the coverage reviewed to state an official cause and manner. Readers comparing articles should treat the April 2 report as the later and more specific source.

What the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office does
Fulton County’s official process page says its Medical Examiner investigates deaths involving suspected injury or poisoning, and sudden or unexplained deaths. The office determines cause and manner of death. That division of responsibility explains why the cause in this case came from the Medical Examiner rather than from police, whose statements describe events and the circumstances of the flight.
