Young Hearts (2024) is a tender Belgian-Dutch coming-of-age drama about the fear, exhilaration, and uncertainty of first love. Written and directed by Anthony Schatteman, the film follows 14-year-old Elias after he develops feelings for Alexander, his new neighbor. Rather than building its story around sensational conflict, Young Hearts concentrates on a quieter question: how can a young person accept what he feels when he is not yet sure what those feelings mean—or how other people will respond?

That approach makes the film both specifically queer and broadly recognizable. Elias’s experience is rooted in self-discovery, but the emotional language is familiar to anyone who remembers the embarrassment, longing, secrecy, and hope of a first serious crush.
What is Young Hearts about?
Elias lives in a rural community when Alexander moves in next door. The two boys are both 14, and their growing closeness becomes the center of Elias’s emotional life. He is drawn toward Alexander, but attraction also brings anxiety: Elias worries about what his feelings say about him, whether he can be honest with friends and family, and whether Alexander might return them.

The official synopsis describes Elias trying to manage his inner turmoil in order to prove that he is worthy of Alexander’s heart. That framing is important because the film’s principal struggle is internal rather than external. The story is not primarily about a villain, a public confrontation, or a dramatic social crisis. It is about the way uncertainty can make ordinary interactions feel enormous when someone is falling in love for the first time.
Interactions with Elias’s friends and family create more questions than answers. He wants closeness, but he is also afraid of exposure. He wants to be understood, but does not necessarily have the vocabulary—or the confidence—to explain himself. Schatteman treats those contradictions as part of adolescence rather than as evidence that Elias is confused in a simplistic sense.
This is a spoiler-light overview. The film’s emotional development matters more than a sequence of plot surprises, and its central tension is Elias’s movement toward honesty and self-acceptance.
A queer first-love story without reducing itself to trauma
Young Hearts is openly concerned with queer self-discovery, but it does not define its characters only through hardship. Its subject is first love: the sudden intensity of wanting to be near someone, the tendency to overread every gesture, and the fear that revealing the truth could change everything.

That distinction reflects Schatteman’s stated purpose. He has described wanting to make the romantic story he wished he could have seen when he was young—a film in which following one’s heart and the experience of love are treated as universal. The film therefore places queer adolescence inside a recognizable romantic framework instead of presenting it as a separate category of young life.
The approach does not erase the particular pressures Elias faces. His sexuality is connected to insecurity, concealment, and the lack of clear answers at home and school. But the movie’s emotional emphasis is not on making the audience pity him. It asks the audience to recognize the vulnerability of wanting someone before a person has learned how to protect himself from rejection.
Anthony Schatteman’s autobiographical starting point
Schatteman’s director statement gives the film a personal foundation. He has spoken about growing up insecure about his sexuality, hiding parts of himself, and not having the answers he needed from the adults and institutions around him. Those experiences informed the film’s desire to offer younger viewers a form of representation he did not have.
That does not make Young Hearts a literal account of Schatteman’s childhood. The available production material supports autobiographical inspiration and emotional truth, not the claim that the film recounts his life exactly. The distinction matters: Schatteman uses personal memory to shape the film’s empathy and perspective, while Elias remains a fictional character in a constructed story.

The rural setting: familiar places made cinematic
The film was shot in and around Schatteman’s native village in Belgium, including places connected to his former street, school, cycling route, and swimming area. Those locations give the setting a double quality. It is contemporary and recognizable, but it is also filtered through memory.
That combination helps explain the film’s gentle, almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Rural spaces are not used simply as picturesque background. Streets, paths, schools, and swimming areas become part of the emotional geography of adolescence: places where the characters can encounter one another, hide in plain sight, or attach powerful memories to ordinary surroundings.
The visual world supports the film’s theme of first love as an experience that changes the scale of familiar life. A road that was previously just part of a daily bicycle ride can become the route to an important meeting. A neighbor’s arrival can make the whole community feel newly charged.

Cast and performances
Lou Goossens plays Elias, while Marius De Saeger plays Alexander. Both actors were making their feature-film debuts, and Goossens was making his feature leading-role debut. The production reportedly conducted an open casting process involving approximately 1,500 boys before narrowing the search. Schatteman has said De Saeger was discovered playing football at school, while Goossens emerged during later casting. The two were chosen after demonstrating an immediate connection in a chemistry test.
Goossens carries the film’s most difficult task: Elias’s feelings often have to be communicated before he can articulate them. His performance depends on hesitation, glances, changes in posture, and the effort to appear unaffected. De Saeger’s Alexander is not merely a destination for Elias’s desire; his presence gives the relationship enough openness and uncertainty to remain emotionally alive.
The principal supporting cast includes Geert Van Rampelberg as Luk, Emilie De Roo as Nathalie, and Dirk Van Dijck as Fred. De Roo’s work was later recognized with a Best Supporting Role award at the 2026 Ensors, according to the official awards record.
The production also involved child psychologist Oliver Roels when approaching the romantic material. The press materials describe conversations with the young actors and their parents and identify the kissing scene as a sensitive performance moment. This is relevant as production context, but it does not justify assumptions about the actors’ private identities or personal experiences. The roles they play are not evidence of their sexuality.
How the film handles intimacy
The intimacy in Young Hearts is framed through emotional uncertainty rather than explicitness. A look, a pause, or an attempt to say something difficult can carry as much weight as a conventional romantic declaration. That restraint suits the characters’ ages and the film’s interest in feelings that are still being discovered.
It also keeps the story focused on mutual vulnerability. Elias is not simply trying to “win” Alexander. He is trying to understand himself well enough to be honest with another person. The idea that he must prove he is worthy of Alexander’s heart captures both the sweetness and the insecurity of the situation: first love can feel like an invitation, but also like an examination one might fail.
Reception and festival recognition
Young Hearts had a substantial festival run across youth, queer, and general international film events. Its festival appearances included the Berlinale, Seattle International Film Festival, Inside Out Toronto, Zlín International Film Festival for Children and Youth, Frameline, NewFest, Reeling, Out on Film Atlanta, Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and Montclair Film, among others.
The awards record reflects the film’s appeal to several overlapping audiences. It received a Crystal Bear Special Mention at the Berlinale and a Best Feature Special Mention at Pink Apple. It also won audience and jury prizes at several LGBTQ+ festivals, youth-film recognition at Zlín and Ale Kino!, and a Best Feature Film award at the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Lou Goossens received performance prizes at multiple festivals.
The official record also lists three 2026 Ensor recognitions at Film Festival Oostende: Best Youth Fiction, Best Supporting Role for Emilie De Roo, and the Kinepolis audience award.
Critical reaction has been positive overall, but it is not unanimous. Supportive responses have praised the film’s sensitivity, empathy, naturalism, and careful treatment of fragile feelings. One quoted assessment emphasizes the trauma that can accompany coming of age, while other excerpts highlight the film’s warmth. A notable counterpoint comes from Peter Bradshaw, who argued that the film can feel too smooth and passionless.
That criticism points to the main trade-off in Schatteman’s approach. The film’s softness is its strength when the viewer wants a reassuring, emotionally attentive queer romance. It may be a limitation for viewers looking for sharper conflict, greater unpredictability, or more complicated social consequences. Young Hearts chooses tenderness over dramatic volatility, and its success depends on whether that choice feels honest rather than underwritten.

Music and atmosphere
The original motion-picture soundtrack was composed by Ruben de Gheselle. Apple Music lists Young Hearts (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) as a 16-song album running approximately 26 minutes, released on December 18, 2024.
The music belongs to the film’s broader atmosphere of memory and emotional awakening. It is best understood as a digital companion to the movie rather than as a separately verified physical soundtrack release: the available research confirms a digital album, not a CD or vinyl edition.

Who should watch it?
Young Hearts is a strong choice for viewers seeking a gentle queer coming-of-age film, a first-love story centered on boys, or youth cinema that treats emotional confusion with empathy rather than ridicule. It may also work well for audiences interested in the relationship between personal memory, rural setting, and filmmaking.

The film’s emotional stakes are real, but it does not pursue every possible source of tension. Its achievement lies less in reinventing the plot of first love than in giving queer characters room to experience that plot with tenderness, possibility, and ordinary romantic hope.
Ultimately, Young Hearts presents queer first love not as a problem that must define a person forever, but as one of the formative experiences through which a person begins to know himself. Its rural fairy-tale setting, intimate performances, autobiographical impulse, and festival recognition all serve that central idea: the feelings may be frightening, but they are also universal.
