You Should Have Left turns a remote Welsh holiday into a psychological haunted-house puzzle: as Theo and his family settle into an unfamiliar home, its impossible geometry and Theo’s troubled past unsettle their grip on reality. The 2020 film, written and directed by David Koepp, stars Kevin Bacon, Amanda Seyfried and Avery Essex.
What is You Should Have Left about?
Theo takes his family to a remote Welsh home for a quiet retreat, but the house soon feels less like a refuge than a trap. Its layout does not behave as expected, while episodes from Theo’s past return and reality grows harder to trust. Universal’s official film page describes the story without revealing its later turns.

The film’s tension comes from that collision between a domestic setting and an unstable point of view. The house is the visible puzzle; Theo’s past makes it difficult to know how much of what is happening can be taken at face value.
Is You Should Have Left based on a book?
Yes. The film adapts Daniel Kehlmann’s 2017 novella. But Koepp’s screen version makes substantial changes to the story’s point of entry and form, rather than simply transferring the book to the screen.
#1 Best Overall
| Element | Kehlmann’s novella | Koepp’s film |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonist | An unnamed screenwriter | Theo, a named retired banker |
| Narrative form | A journal that relates events in jagged fragments | A more streamlined film narrative |
| How the unease unfolds | The fragmented form leaves cracks and ambiguity in the account | The film uses more accessible thriller mechanics; this is an interpretation of the contrast discussed in The Guardian’s review |
The Guardian’s review by Benjamin Lee, published June 19, 2020, argues that the adaptation smooths out some of the novella’s unsettling roughness. That is a useful way to think about the trade-off: the film gives the premise a more direct screen shape, while the book’s broken journal structure is itself part of the disturbance.
Who stars in the film, and how long is it?
Kevin Bacon plays Theo, with Amanda Seyfried and Avery Essex also starring. Universal lists the runtime as 1 hour 34 minutes and the rating as R for some violence, disturbing images, sexual content and language.

What did critics make of it?
Lee’s Guardian review calls the adaptation smooth but says it loses much of the novella’s haunting power, pointing to concerns about atmosphere and jump scares. That response captures a likely dividing line: viewers drawn to an eerie, ambiguous premise may value the source story’s jaggedness, while the film offers a more conventional thriller framework.
Apple TV’s US listing displayed a 40% Tomatometer score when accessed October 7, 2026, based on 110 reviews: 44 fresh and 66 rotten. This is a changeable platform-displayed aggregate, not a permanent rating for the film.

Where was the film shot?
Although the story is set in Wales, the New Jersey Department of State says scenes were filmed in Jersey City and Cresskill. The reported production locations therefore should not be mistaken for the film’s fictional Welsh setting. The department’s June 23, 2020 announcement also reported the on-demand release date.
