The finale of You is thematically fitting: it takes away the romantic glow that Joe Goldberg has spent four seasons manufacturing and leaves him alive, unrepentant, and locked away. Whether it lands dramatically is a separate question, and reviewers and viewers split on it. The moral point is clear; the open question is whether the season earns that point or states it too plainly.
Spoiler warning: this review discusses how Season 5 ends. If you have not finished the season, stop before the section titled “How the finale resolves.”
What Season 5 sets up
Season 5, the fifth and final season, premiered on Netflix on April 24, 2025, and runs ten episodes. It picks up three years after the Season 4 ending. Joe and Kate have left London, Kate now leads the Lockwood Corporation, and Joe presents himself as her husband and an admired public figure. Netflix’s season description frames the story as Joe’s return to New York for an apparent happily-ever-after, threatened by “the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.”
That premise gives the season a built-in structure for a finale. It moves Joe back to the city where Season 1 began and asks whether a new setting, more money, and social approval can change who he is. The show’s own framing points the same way. Penn Badgley told Netflix Tudum that “every season they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” and said that returning to where the show started helped it become “grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish.” Co-showrunners Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo described the return to New York as a way to bring the story full circle. Those are statements of intent. Whether the episodes deliver the circularity is what the rest of this review tests.

How the finale resolves
Bronte enters Joe’s orbit as part of an effort to expose him for Beck’s murder and the other crimes linked to him. She and the people around her gather evidence and pursue him. Her empathy and attraction, however, make her open to his self-serving account of himself. The finale unfolds in this order:
- Joe tries to steer the ending toward a romantic resolution with Bronte, who is still tangled in his version of events.
- He makes his demand: she should kill him.
- Bronte refuses. She shoots him as he tries to take the gun.
- Police arrest him.
- He is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, cut off from the people who could become objects of his obsession.
- In the closing scene he reads a fan letter and keeps blaming his environment and society rather than accepting responsibility.
Why the ending is fitting on its own terms
The show’s creative team has been direct about its reasoning. In the Tudum finale explainer, Badgley argues: “Somebody killing Joe wouldn’t be justice. It would be vengeance.” He adds that the person who killed Joe would be brought down to his level, and says the series gets “as close as we can” to justice. Foley makes a parallel point: “Death would be too easy.” Foley also described the choice to end with Joe unchanged: “We knew we wanted to end with Joe having not changed. That was the most important thing.” These are the creators explaining their intent, not a neutral definition of justice, and they should be read that way.

On its own logic, the choice is consistent. Joe’s self-image depends on being a romantic hero who is misunderstood. Death would hand him a tragic exit that flatters that image. Prison and isolation strip the glamour and remove the audience he has spent seasons courting. The final scene’s refusal to show remorse keeps the ending aligned with the character rather than rescuing him with a late change of heart.
Where the execution draws criticism
TIME’s review by Judy Berman and Eliana Dockterman is the clearest critical counterpoint. Its authors argue that the final season loses subtlety and repeats the obvious point that Joe is a bad person. Berman describes the last ten episodes as repetitive and the finale as didactic. That is a judgment by those two reviewers, not a verdict shared by all critics or viewers, but it names the risk the season runs: a show that once made its audience complicit in Joe’s charm may end by lecturing them about it.

The ending holds up better or worse depending on which question you ask of it:

Reception is divided, not settled
Professional and audience responses do not agree. The Rotten Tomatoes season page includes critics who praise the ending and user comments that are sharply negative. Describing the reception as mixed is more accurate than claiming consensus. Aggregate scores change over time, so check the live page rather than relying on a number quoted in an older article.

Is Season 5 worth watching?
Yes, if you have followed Joe from the start and want the series to resolve its central question rather than leave it open. Watch it for the finale’s refusal to grant Joe the death or the romance he seeks, and for the way it treats his self-justification as the final performance. Expect a season that is more explicit than the early seasons, and judge for yourself whether that explicitness helps or weakens the satire.
