Spoilers for all five seasons of You. Season 4 ends with Joe Goldberg back in New York, newly powerful and publicly respectable—not redeemed. The series finale has since aired: Season 5 is the final season, and Joe ends the story in prison. Here is the season 4 story that sets up that ending.
How does season 4 begin?
After the events of season 3, Joe reinvents himself in London as Jonathan Moore, a university professor. He moves among a wealthy social circle and becomes entangled in a string of murders known as the Eat-the-Rich killings. Netflix released season 4 in two parts, on February 9 and March 9, 2023. Who is the Eat-the-Rich Killer?
The killer is Joe. The season’s central twist is that Joe has been dissociating: the murderous Rhys Montrose he believes he is talking to is a projection, not the real Rhys. Joe committed the murders and imprisoned Marienne, then lost conscious access to what he had done. The apparent cat-and-mouse mystery is therefore Joe confronting a version of himself while trying to believe he is someone else. What happens to Marienne, Nadia, and Kate?
Marienne gets away
Joe holds Marienne captive, but she survives and escapes. Her survival means Joe’s London crimes do not disappear with his attempt to start over.

Nadia is framed
Nadia and her boyfriend, Edward, uncover evidence tying Joe to his crimes. Joe kills Edward and frames Nadia for the murder. The framing leaves Nadia unable to expose Joe credibly.
Kate forgives Joe without knowing everything
Joe kills Kate’s father, Tom Lockwood. After Joe survives a suicide attempt, he tells Kate that he is a killer—but conceals that he killed her father. Kate forgives him without knowing that crucial fact. Showrunner Sera Gamble described the bridge scene where Joe says aloud what he is as the first time he truly does so. Where does season 4 leave Joe?
Joe and Kate return to New York. Kate’s wealth and influence help restore his public standing, and Joe regains contact with his son, Henry. He has admitted to being a killer, but his actions—hiding Tom’s murder, framing Nadia, and accepting the advantages Kate’s position brings—show that the confession is not reform. The ending gives Joe more money, legitimacy, and room to operate, not a clean slate. Netflix’s ending explainer describes the season 4 outcome.

In the finale, Bronte is revealed to be Louise Flannery, a former student of Beck who has joined others trying to expose Joe. Marienne, Nadia, and Kate also help bring him down. Bronte saves Joe from a fire, then refuses his attempt to manipulate her into killing him. Police arrest Joe, and the series ends with him serving life in prison while continuing to deflect blame.
