The book’s central question is not simply what Unnikrishnan plans to do, but how a person arrives at such a decision. The review distinguishes his planned death from taking his own life and presents the choice as difficult and layered, shaped by pain, personal agency, relationships and the search for meaning. This is the novel’s literary framing, not medical or legal guidance.
How does the novel tell its story?
Ghosh describes the novel’s narration as second person. Its movement between past and present gives Unnikrishnan’s memories room to complicate the account he offers Paru. At the same time, the review notes that a thirty-year stretch of his life remains unexplained, leaving a significant gap rather than providing a complete chronology.

The title and narrative voice place the reader close to the life being examined. That closeness can make the story feel intimate, while its missing years preserve uncertainty about what can—and cannot—be understood from another person’s account.
What themes does the review draw out?
Memory and time
Unnikrishnan’s recollections connect an announced future with a past that does not arrive in a neat, continuous sequence. The unexplained thirty-year period is part of that design: the story’s account of a life remains partial.

Loneliness and pain
The review points to loneliness and pain as important elements in the novel’s treatment of a chosen death. An epigraph attributed in the review to Dr Heidi Henson reads: “There are a few people around me who live an uncelebrated life, like me.” The line is presented here as the review reports it; the original publication context is not established.
Choice and the wider context
The story considers agency and suffering through Unnikrishnan’s decision, but Ghosh also identifies a limitation in the novel’s focus: it can leave the work of doctors Balan and Kamalakshi around euthanasia in the background. That tension matters to the book’s scope. Its attention is concentrated on one man’s life and choice rather than evenly distributed across everyone involved.

Who might appreciate You?
The novel may appeal to readers interested in translated fiction that uses an unusual narrative voice to explore memory, time and the meaning of a chosen death. Readers looking for a fully explained life story or sustained attention to the broader medical and social context may find the review’s noted gaps significant.
