Yes. Arnold Schwarzenegger owns the M-47 he crewed in the Austrian Army, according to the most direct account available: The Tank Museum says he bought that tank and shipped it to the United States. The reporting does not include a current ownership register, so the claim rests on a museum’s account of the purchase and a 2023 interview about where he keeps a tank today, not on a present-day title record.
The Austrian service connection
Schwarzenegger’s link to the M-47 begins with his compulsory military service. The Austrian Armed Forces (Österreichisches Bundesheer) say he completed his basic service from October 1965 to June 1966 at the Belgier-Kaserne in Graz, where he drove an M-47 combat tank. The official account, published after his return visit to the base on August 8, 2012, quotes the sentence in German: “Dort hatte er von Oktober 1965 bis Juni 1966 seinen Grundwehrdienst beim Österreichischen Bundesheer als Fahrer eines M-47-Kampfpanzers geleistet.” In English, that means he performed his basic service there as the driver of an M-47 combat tank.
The same account records a recollection that he had a “small accident” with his M-47 while walking around the barracks, which the official photo gallery describes as driving a tank into a garage wall. These details establish which vehicle type he crewed and where. They do not establish which individual M-47 he later acquired.
How he came to own the tank
The link between the Austrian tank and a later private purchase comes from The Tank Museum, which published on June 28, 2024: “After serving in the M47 in the Austrian military, Arnold Schwarzenegger purchased the tank he crewed and shipped it over to the US.” The museum repeated the same statement in a 2025 report. Because the museum’s wording names the tank he crewed rather than a model in general, it is the strongest support for the claim that the tank he owns is the one he drove.

The Los Angeles Times adds the mechanics of the transfer. According to its account, Austria’s defense ministry located the tank, which had been buried as a Cold War-era fortification, and gave it to Schwarzenegger. He paid to ship it to Columbus, Ohio, for a Planet Hollywood display. The article attributes these transfer details to Warren Motts, founder of Motts Military Museum.
The display, the loan and the 2008 request
The tank then passed through a display and loan period in Ohio. Deseret News reported in 2008 that Schwarzenegger asked the museum to return it, citing concerns about upkeep and a wish to offer rides to schoolchildren. Motts told that outlet that Schwarzenegger had acquired the tank from Austria and shipped it to Florida. That account differs from the Los Angeles Times version, which describes the shipment to Columbus; the reporting does not explain how the two routes fit together, so readers should treat the sequence of shipments as reported rather than confirmed.

Where the tank is now, and what is not proven
The most recent account of the tank’s whereabouts is a 2023 Motion Picture Association interview in which a crew member says Schwarzenegger keeps a tank in Santa Clarita, California, and that it is the same model he drove during his Austrian service. That is a reported possession account. It does not confirm legal title, and the interview does not state how the tank is registered or insured.

Not the same tank: The Tank Museum’s M47
The Tank Museum’s own M47 is frequently confused with Schwarzenegger’s, so the two vehicles need to be separated. The museum’s tank has a different history and a different status.

The museum’s Head of Collections, Chris van Schaardenburgh, described its tank this way: “The M47 is the only one of its type in the Museum’s collection, and we are thrilled to work in partnership with Matthew Pyle to restore it to running order.” That statement concerns the museum’s vehicle, and it does not describe Schwarzenegger’s.
