Spoilers for Season 5, Episode 8 and the Part 2 premiere. Season 5 paused with John Dutton facing an impeachment push, Rip away in Texas with the herd, and the family divided over Jamie. The November 10, 2024, premiere then opened Part 2 with a devastating discovery: John was dead.
Where Season 5, Part 1 left off
Episode 8, “A Knife and No Coin,” was the midseason endpoint. Paramount+’s Canada episode listing describes it as a major change for the Yellowstone cowboys.
Jamie’s impeachment push put John’s governorship at risk
Jamie followed through on his proposal to impeach Governor John Dutton. Hulu’s indexed episode guide reported that the Montana legislature supported the move by a vote of 67 to 33. John was therefore facing political removal while the family and ranch were already under pressure.
Rip was away with the cattle
Rip had taken the herd to Texas to protect it from an illness. When the story resumed, Beth called him home. The cattle operation remained a practical ranch crisis, not a problem the show had already resolved.

The family conflict was still personal
Jamie’s move against John sharpened the divide between the brothers. Beth distrusted and opposed Jamie, while Kayce was caught up in the family dispute and the question of the ranch’s future. The political fight and the family fault line were tied together: Jamie was challenging his father’s position, and Beth saw Jamie as a threat.
What the Part 2 premiere revealed
Spoilers for the November 10, 2024, premiere. The first episode of Part 2 began the six-episode continuation promoted as the season’s closing stretch. Beth and Kayce found John dead in the governor’s mansion. Authorities initially treated his death as suicide, but Beth believed the scene had been staged.

In its recap, MLive reported that flashbacks showed Sarah Atwood had hired the killers. Jamie learned what had happened after the fact and was distressed. This was a new revelation in the premiere, not the point where Part 1 had stopped.

By separating the midseason cliffhanger from the premiere’s revelations, the change in stakes is clear: Part 1 left John fighting to keep his office, while Part 2 opened with his death and a suspected murder. The continuation’s central question became how Beth, Kayce, and Jamie would respond to what had happened.
Paramount Network’s companion programming described its November 13, 2024, episode as a recap of recent episodes and a discussion of what came next, reflecting the same transition from the midseason pause into the final run.
