Spoilers ahead. Kayce’s push to revisit John Dutton’s death changes the medical examiner’s finding—and the apparent murder weapon points back to Kayce himself. Meanwhile, Sarah Atwood is shot, but the recap does not identify who fired.
What changes in the investigation into John’s death?
The recap opens with a flashback: three men enter the Governor’s mansion, stage John’s death as a suicide and make it appear that he took oxycodone. In the present, Kayce presses the medical examiner to take another look at her conclusion.
She finds signs that John had been restrained and revises the cause of death to undetermined. That does not, by itself, identify who killed him or establish who ordered the killing. Kayce then learns that the pistol used in the death appears to be his—a gun the recap says was stolen from the Livestock Commission’s office. The weapon gives the investigation a new lead, while also putting Kayce’s own connection to the gun in focus.
What happens when Kayce confronts Jamie?
Kayce confronts Jamie, who denies involvement. Jamie argues that the ranch may have to sell some land to avoid losing everything. The recap presents him as persuasive in the moment, but neither his denial nor Sarah’s later account settles whether he was involved.

How do the murder investigation and land dispute intersect?
As John’s death is publicly treated as a homicide investigation, the recap’s political and ranch storylines intensify. The acting governor and Jamie push to reverse John’s orders and advance development plans associated with Market Equities. Beth accepts that selling at least some land may be unavoidable, while Rainwater offers help. Mo urges Kayce to trust that he will know what choice to make.
The investigation therefore unfolds alongside a fight over the ranch’s future: the people pursuing the development agenda face political risk as scrutiny of John’s death grows. The recap does not say that the homicide investigation has resolved the land dispute.

What happens to Sarah Atwood?
Sarah panics after John’s death is publicly described as a homicide investigation. She tells Jamie that she accepted the risk of planning the murder so he could not be tied to it. Near the end, a man who seems to recognize her shoots her while she is in a car. Jamie hears the shooting over the phone and calls 911.
The recap does not identify the shooter or report Sarah’s eventual condition. Her statement about shielding Jamie is her account, not an independent finding that establishes his role.
