Spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 5. The wilderness group tries to execute Coach Ben, but the shot misses and he survives. In the present, clues around Lottie’s death make Tai’s unaccounted-for hour look troubling—but the episode does not reveal who killed Lottie or prove Tai did it.
Paramount+ lists “Did Tai Do That?” as Season 3, Episode 5, with a 55-minute runtime and a March 7, 2025 release date. Its official synopsis says, “The Yellowjackets confront the reality of having to pull an Old Yeller.” That line points toward the group’s decision about Ben; they contemplate killing him, but he is still alive at the end of the episode. Paramount+’s episode listing notes that content availability varies by region and may change.

What happens to Coach Ben in the wilderness?
After blaming Ben for trying to burn them, the group takes him prisoner and decides to execute him by firing squad. The decision is both a survival measure and a moral test: they have made Ben responsible for a threat to the group, but carrying out the sentence means choosing to kill him.
Tai tries to summon her other self
Natalie is reluctant, while Tai is assigned the fatal shot. Van suggests that Tai’s fearless other self might be able to do what Tai cannot. Tai and Van try to draw that side of her out through intimacy, but Tai says it has not worked. Later, Tai deliberately kills a trapped rabbit while trying to summon her other self through a blood sacrifice. That attempt fails too.

Akilah’s vision changes Lottie’s mind
Lottie, Travis, and Akilah make a dangerous trip into the caves. Akilah loses consciousness after entering a gas-filled area. When she wakes, she says she saw Ben as a bridge across a chasm toward city lights and felt hope. Lottie takes the vision as a reason Ben must live.
The shot misses, but Ben is left badly injured
At the firing line, Tai’s other self appears and steadies her aim. Before she can shoot, Travis shoves Ben aside and Lottie forces the rifle upward. The shot misses. Shauna and Melissa then cut Ben’s remaining Achilles tendon to make escape difficult. He survives, badly injured and unable to walk.
What happens after Lottie’s death in the present?
Misty confirms Lottie’s identity at the morgue and pressures the coroner for access to her effects. Lottie’s phone is missing. When Misty tells Shauna, Van, and Tai about the death, they question the accident ruling and quickly begin suspecting one another.
Misty and Walter follow the money and the phone
Walter and Shauna follow Misty to Lottie’s father, Malcolm Matthews. Lottie had apparently been staying with him for weeks, although she told Shauna she had nowhere to go. Misty finds a receipt showing a $50,000 withdrawal shortly before Lottie’s death. Walter finds Lottie’s phone and clones it before it is reset. Those discoveries deepen the mystery; they do not identify a killer.

Tai and Van were in Manhattan near the time Lottie died. Van wonders about an hour Tai cannot account for, and a brief meeting in a park makes the concern more personal: Sammy recoils from Tai and asks whether she is still his mother. The episode raises the possibility that Tai’s other self is present, but it does not establish that this self killed Lottie.
Shauna refuses Walter’s request for a DNA sample, and the episode leaves open what Walter wants from his investigation. Shauna also has an unexpected, compassionate moment with Malcolm, who mistakes her for Lottie. After Sammy’s rejection, Tai decides she needs a change of scenery, and Van agrees to go with her.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did Tai do that?
The episode’s title asks whether Tai was involved in Lottie’s death, but it supplies no answer. Tai’s missing hour and Sammy’s reaction are reasons for concern, not proof. The show leaves open whether Tai’s other self was present, what happened during the missing time, and who killed Lottie.
Why did Lottie take out $50,000?
The receipt establishes that Lottie withdrew $50,000 shortly before she died, as shown in the episode. It does not explain why she took the money, whether it was connected to her stay with her father, or whether it has anything to do with her death.
How the two timelines echo each other
In the wilderness, the group openly turns a survival decision into a planned execution, then fails to carry it out. In the present, the survivors talk about friendship and pursue an investigation while withholding information, manipulating access, and suspecting one another. The parallel makes both timelines feel morally uncertain, but it does not confirm that the events are causally connected.
Who killed Lottie?
The episode ends without resolving Lottie’s death. The missing phone, the withdrawal, her undisclosed stay with Malcolm, Walter’s motives, Shauna’s refusal to provide DNA, and Tai’s missing hour all remain pieces of an unfinished investigation—not answers. Who killed Lottie, and why, remains the cliffhanger.
