Spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 3, “Them’s the Brakes.” The episode follows Mari’s return from Ben’s cave and a toxic-fume ordeal in the wilderness, while Taissa and Van confront a possible connection between Van’s improving cancer prognosis and a death in the present day. That connection is Taissa’s interpretation, not something the episode confirms.
What happened in “Them’s the Brakes” in the wilderness?
In this Yellowjackets season 3 episode 3 recap, the wilderness story turns on Mari’s capture, her return to the group, and a cave that exposes several survivors to poisonous gas. Paramount+ identifies “Them’s the Brakes” as Season 3, Episode 3 in its episode guide.
Mari escapes Ben and returns to the group
Ben is holding Mari in a cave. She tries to persuade him to let her go, but their confrontation becomes chaotic when bear spray affects them both. Ben eventually releases her. When Mari gets back to the others, her explanation falls apart, and Shauna urges the group to return to the cave and look for Ben.
The cave visions bring Jackie back
The group explores a branching cave system. Shauna, Van, and Akilah enter a passage filled with poisonous gas and each experiences a hallucination. Ben rescues the three, while Natalie confronts him with a shotgun.

Shauna’s vision includes Jackie, whose death remains a source of grief and guilt for her. Actor Sophie Nélisse described the recurring visions as a metaphor for unresolved inner demons: “I think it’s just a metaphor that your demons will haunt you forever until you’ve made peace with it.” Nélisse also said Shauna still feels responsible for Jackie’s death and cannot forgive herself. That is the actor’s reading of Shauna’s visions, not a definitive explanation established by the series. TV Insider’s interview with Nélisse was published February 21, 2025.
What do Taissa and Van learn in the present day?
Van’s cancer may be in partial remission
Van tells Taissa that her terminal cancer has stopped metastasizing and may be in partial remission. Taissa then tells Van that the waiter who chased them after their dine-and-dash died. She suggests that Natalie’s death may have been a sacrifice and Van’s improved prognosis a gift.

The episode presents this as Taissa’s belief. It does not establish that the wilderness caused the waiter’s death or Van’s remission, or prove a supernatural exchange between them.
The Man With No Eyes appears in a home video
Later, Taissa and Van watch a home video. An ice-cream commercial in the footage features the Man With No Eyes, linking the figure to Taissa’s childhood memory.

Why does Shauna accuse Misty?
Shauna’s car brakes fail, deepening her suspicion that someone is targeting her. She accuses Misty, but the episode does not identify who caused the brake failure. The present-day story also carries forward the fallout around Lottie and Callie, alongside Shauna’s distrust and tensions within her family.

“Them’s the Brakes” leaves the central uncertainties open: whether the wilderness has any connection to the present-day deaths and Van’s prognosis, who may be behind Shauna’s brake trouble, and what the survivors’ cave visions mean beyond the immediate danger of the gas. Jackie appears in Shauna’s hallucination, but the episode does not settle whether that vision has a supernatural cause.
