It draws on the historical figure who served Oda Nobunaga, but tells a supernatural alternate-history story—not a documentary or a straightforward account of his life.
What is Yasuke: O Samurai Negro about?
Set in a fantastical version of feudal Japan, the series follows Yasuke, a samurai of African descent who has left his violent past behind. He is drawn back into danger when he takes on the task of protecting a girl with mysterious powers. Netflix’s synopsis includes magic and mechs, making the series a blend of anime action, fantasy and alternate history rather than historical reconstruction. Netflix’s announcement describes it as a six-episode series set in “alternate fantastical Japan during the feudal era.”
Is the anime based on a true story?
Yasuke was a real person. TIME reports that he arrived in Japan in 1579 and served Oda Nobunaga. But the surviving account of his life is limited: TIME says his country of origin has not been confirmed and that there is no verifiable record of his life after 1582. Accounts and interpretations of what happened after Nobunaga’s death should therefore be treated cautiously. TIME’s historical overview distinguishes that uncertain record from the anime’s imagined events.
The series takes that historical starting point and invents a fantasy adventure around it. Mechs, magic, supernatural conflict and the show’s protective mission are elements of its fictional plot, not claims about documented events in Yasuke’s life. It is best understood as fantasy entertainment inspired by a historical figure, not as a source for learning his biography.

How many episodes are there, and who made the series?
Yasuke has six episodes. Netflix’s catalog lists it as a 2021 anime, and the company’s March 9, 2021 announcement gave April 29, 2021 as its U.S. launch date. Netflix’s title page is the official catalog listing; cast and audio or subtitle options shown there may vary by country.
LeSean Thomas created the series and is credited by Netflix as an executive producer and director. Netflix’s announcement also names animation studio MAPPA, character designer and director Takeshi Koike, performer LaKeith Stanfield and musician Flying Lotus among the creative team. These are series-level credits; they do not establish that each person worked on every episode in the same role.
