XSplit Broadcaster CPU Usage Too High During a Continuous YouTube Stream: How to Diagnose It

A practical diagnosis path for high XSplit CPU use: verify the stream output, check encoder load, adjust processing and encoding settings, and separate network problems from CPU bottlenecks.

First check whether XSplit is dropping frames in the actual YouTube output or only in the Stage preview. A preview FPS dip alone does not prove the stream is impaired. Compare XSplit’s status bar with the live output or a local recording, then check encoder load before changing settings.

Is the stream actually dropping frames?

XSplit says its Stage preview can show FPS drops while the livestream or recording remains smooth. Its support guidance says this is not a concern when CPU and GPU use are low and the resulting output is smooth. Check the XSplit status bar, then inspect the live stream or a recording rather than relying on the preview alone. See XSplit Support’s Fixing FPS-Related Issues (updated date shown: 11/08/2022).

  • Preview is slow, output is smooth: the preview may be the only affected view. Avoid changing stream settings until you verify an output problem.
  • Output is choppy or losing frames: continue with encoder and resource checks below.
  • Output looks healthy in XSplit but viewers report stalls: test the outbound connection and YouTube stream health separately; local CPU may not be the cause.

For diagnosis, note CPU and GPU use, XSplit version, output resolution and frame rate, codec, scene and source complexity, and whether the symptom appears in the preview, local recording, or live output. The cause cannot be determined from the fact that a stream has run for a long time. Duration alone does not establish a memory leak, overheating, or defective hardware.

Check encoder errors and system load

YouTube recommends checking the live dashboard for encoder errors and checking CPU load on the encoder. Its guidance puts the distinction plainly: “You can look for encoder errors on the live dashboard and check the CPU load on your encoder.” Read YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting steps while the problem is occurring, if possible.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check XSplit’s status and the YouTube live dashboard for encoder warnings or errors.
  2. Observe CPU and GPU use while the stream is active, not just after closing XSplit.
  3. Close unnecessary programs and background processes, then compare the actual output again. XSplit lists reducing competing processes as a remedy for FPS-related issues.
  4. Change one setting at a time and observe the result. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or merely shifted load elsewhere.

Lower XSplit’s processing load in a reversible order

Try the processing preference that matches the overloaded component

In XSplit Broadcaster, open Tools > Settings > Advanced. The documented choices include Prefer GPU and Prefer CPU; the default balances CPU and GPU processing. XSplit recommends trying Prefer GPU when CPU use is high, and Prefer CPU when GPU use is high. Prefer GPU uses GPU functions for accelerated video decoding and other processing, so this can move work to the GPU rather than eliminate it. Test the alternate preference and check the actual stream, not only the Stage preview. See XSplit’s Settings documentation.

Review the broadcast encoder and reduce workload if needed

  1. Open Broadcast and select the gear icon for the output.
  2. Open Video Encoding Settings and review the available codec and encoder choices. XSplit suggests testing another available video codec; choices depend on the system and software version.
  3. If resource use remains high, test a lower stage resolution or frame rate. Change one at a time, then inspect the live output or a recording for both smoothness and acceptable image quality.

Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce work, but it also changes what viewers receive. Choose a setting that meets the programme’s needs rather than lowering quality blindly. XSplit’s FPS guidance describes these adjustments at Fixing FPS-Related Issues.

Separate CPU or encoder trouble from upload trouble

If XSplit’s output looks and sounds healthy but the YouTube stream stalls, investigate the outbound connection instead of assuming the CPU is responsible. XSplit documents a Test Bandwidth button in the output encoding settings and advises setting bitrate in line with its calculated average data rate. YouTube also recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom: its undated Streaming tips guidance says to leave 20% room.

Bitrate must fit both the selected output and the available upload capacity. YouTube’s undated live encoder settings recommendations include H.264 at 6 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them; leave the recommended upload headroom and use the values for the output you actually selected.

  • Encoder errors or high CPU coincide with bad output: prioritize competing-process and XSplit encoder/workload checks.
  • Encoder output is healthy, but the live stream has interruptions: check upload capacity, bitrate fit, and YouTube’s stream health indicators.
  • Both encoder and connection warnings appear: address each independently; one problem does not rule out the other.

When a hardware encoder upgrade makes sense

Consider hardware only after the checks above indicate that encoding is CPU-bound. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says Nvidia GPUs include NVENC hardware-based encoding, which can encode without using the CPU. That makes a compatible GPU a possible way to relieve CPU encoding load; it does not guarantee that a particular card will work with your PC or XSplit configuration. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Before buying, verify the GPU and encoder options supported by your installed XSplit version, driver compatibility, power-supply capacity, and case clearance. Hardware encoding can shift work to the GPU, so confirm that it is appropriate for your system rather than treating a new graphics card as a universal fix.

Common symptoms and what to check

What you see First check Next step
Stage preview FPS falls, but viewers and recording see smooth video Compare the XSplit status bar with the actual output and CPU/GPU use. Do not treat the preview alone as proof of a stream failure.
Live output is choppy and CPU is high Check YouTube encoder errors and close unnecessary processes. Test the relevant CPU/GPU preference, another available codec, then lower resolution or frame rate.
Live output is healthy in the encoder but viewers report stalls Check YouTube stream health and available upload capacity. Use XSplit’s Test Bandwidth and bitrate guidance; leave YouTube’s recommended upload headroom.
CPU improves after selecting Prefer GPU, but GPU load rises Check whether the GPU is now the limiting resource. Use the preference that fits the actual bottleneck; avoid assuming processing has disappeared.
