For a first viewing, watch X (2022), then Pearl (2022), then MaXXXine (2024). That release order preserves X’s central mystery, lets Pearl reframe what came before, and then follows Maxine Minx into 1980s Hollywood. For a chronological rewatch, use Pearl → X → MaXXXine.

Written and directed by Ti West, the trilogy connects three sharply different horror films through ambition, performance, aging, sexuality, violence, and the desire to be seen. Mia Goth is the key to that connection: she plays both Maxine and Pearl, linking the series’ young survivor with the older woman at the heart of X.

Content note: The films contain graphic violence, sexual material, exploitation themes, disturbing imagery, and sustained horror involving murder and bodily decline.

What is the X trilogy?

The X trilogy consists of three Ti West films:

  • X (2022): A late-1970s rural Texas slasher about a small group making an adult film.
  • Pearl (2022): A prequel and origin story set on a Texas farm in 1918.
  • MaXXXine (2024): A continuation of Maxine’s story in 1980s Hollywood.

These are not three installments built in one uniform style. X draws on 1970s exploitation cinema and slasher films; Pearl is a saturated, theatrical psychological melodrama with a Technicolor-inspired look; and MaXXXine moves into Hollywood crime horror, neo-noir, giallo imagery, and the Hollywood slasher.

Recommended viewing order

First-time viewing: release order

  1. X (2022)
  2. Pearl (2022)
  3. MaXXXine (2024)

This is the strongest default. X introduces the shared world and its mystery. Pearl then travels backward to show the earlier life of a major figure from X, giving the first film a different emotional and thematic meaning. MaXXXine follows the survivor of X rather than continuing Pearl’s story directly.

Release order also reflects how the trilogy was designed for audiences. Watching Pearl first is not incorrect, but it reveals information that X is structured to withhold. It turns a discovery into background knowledge.

Chronological order: Pearl → X → MaXXXine

Use chronological order for a second viewing or if you are more interested in the timeline than in the original mystery. Pearl is set in 1918, X takes place in 1979, and MaXXXine follows in the 1980s. This sequence emphasizes the movement from Pearl’s isolated farm, to the rural adult-film production in X, to Maxine’s attempt to enter commercial Hollywood.

MaXXXine 1980s Maxine’s attempt to move from adult entertainment into mainstream film

Spoiler-free guide to each film

X (2022)

X follows a small production team traveling to a remote Texas property to make an adult film. The group’s creative and commercial ambitions are already precarious: they are working with limited resources and hoping the project will lead to something larger. The elderly owners of the property introduce a threat that turns the shoot into a violent fight for survival.

The film uses the setting and production itself as part of its horror. Cameras, performers, spectators, money, sex, and violence become difficult to separate. Its late-1970s atmosphere connects it to exploitation and slasher cinema, while its filmmaking storyline reflects the history of low-budget independent production and the overlap between horror and pornography.

Mia Goth plays Maxine, the performer whose story continues in MaXXXine, and also plays the elderly Pearl. That dual casting is not a minor stunt. It places youth and age, desire and resentment, and celebrity fantasy and bodily decline within one visual relationship.

Pearl (2022)

Set on a Texas farm in 1918, Pearl follows a young woman isolated with her ill father and controlling mother. Pearl longs for the glamour and escape represented by the movies she watches. Her dreams of becoming a performer collide with repression, loneliness, family control, and a growing inability to accept the life available to her.

  • DIMENSIONS: This large picture frame features a 1.1-inch wide modern profile and holds a 27x40 x 0.75 poster, picture or artwork.

Pearl is an origin story, but it is not simply a conventional horror prequel explaining a villain’s biography. Its heightened color, theatrical performances, melodramatic structure, and saturated period design make it feel closer to a psychological melodrama or a backstage fable. The horror grows out of the gap between the life Pearl imagines and the life she is forced to inhabit.

West co-wrote the film with Goth. Its principal cast includes Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. Goth’s performance gives the film its unstable center: Pearl can appear charming, desperate, childish, funny, frightening, and self-dramatizing without the film reducing her to one explanation.

MaXXXine (2024)

MaXXXine picks up Maxine’s story after the events of X. Now in 1980s Hollywood, she is trying to move from adult films into legitimate cinema while a killer stalks young women in Los Angeles.

The change of location expands the trilogy’s scale. The isolated Texas farm and improvised film set give way to auditions, studios, producers, agents, police investigations, and the manufactured image of Hollywood. Maxine is still pursuing recognition, but the industry around her is larger and more polished rather than necessarily safer or less exploitative.

The principal cast includes Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. Its visual and tonal references include 1980s crime horror, neo-noir, giallo, and Hollywood slasher traditions.

The title’s capitalized triple-X styling is intentional and should be written as MaXXXine. It preserves Maxine’s name while foregrounding the adult-film identity she is trying to move beyond.

Spoilers: how the three stories connect

Stop here if you have not seen the trilogy. The following section discusses the identities and relationships that connect the films, as well as the broad direction of the characters’ stories. It does not reproduce every death or set-piece.

Pearl and Maxine are the trilogy’s central mirror

In X, Mia Goth plays both Maxine and the elderly Pearl. Pearl is the older woman encountered at the Texas property, while Maxine is the young performer trying to build a future through the film shoot. Pearl travels back to 1918 and makes that older figure its protagonist, showing the ambitions and pressures that preceded the woman seen in X.

The connection is therefore literal, not merely thematic: the two principal female arcs are embodied by the same performer. Maxine and Pearl both want a larger life, both understand performance as a possible route to escape, and both confront systems that judge women through youth, beauty, sexual availability, and usefulness. Their similar starting pressures do not make them identical. The trilogy’s tension comes partly from the different choices they make when ambition meets humiliation and fear.

What happens to Maxine?

Maxine survives X and becomes the protagonist of MaXXXine. Her movement from a rural adult-film production into 1980s mainstream Hollywood is the trilogy’s most direct continuing plotline. The third film treats survival not as a finished victory but as a condition Maxine carries into the next industry.

MaXXXine completes the released trilogy’s current story with Maxine’s Hollywood chapter. West has described it as a satisfying stopping point, while also leaving open the possibility that another idea could someday emerge from the world. That is not confirmation of a fourth film, announced production, or planned sequel.

Who is Howard?

Howard is Pearl’s husband and the elderly man associated with her in X. His relationship with Pearl forms part of the trilogy’s broader examination of marriage, isolation, dependency, and power. Detailed events involving Howard belong to the spoiler territory of X and should be experienced in the film if you want the full impact of the relationship.

The trilogy’s major themes

Fame versus fulfillment

Pearl wants the glamorous life she associates with movies. Maxine wants recognition and a legitimate film career. Both characters treat performance and public visibility as possible escapes from confinement, shame, and an unwanted identity.

The films repeatedly question whether fame can solve the problems that drive someone to pursue it. Recognition may offer money, status, or freedom, but it does not automatically repair loneliness, humiliation, trauma, or the fear of becoming irrelevant. In that sense, the trilogy is less interested in whether its characters can become famous than in what they believe fame will do for them.

Aging, beauty, and the fear of invisibility

The casting of Goth as both Pearl and Maxine turns aging into a literal confrontation between two versions of the same image. X places youth and old age in the same physical and narrative space, while Pearl shows the earlier ambition behind the older woman’s resentment.

This is an interpretive lens rather than a single official statement of the films’ meaning, but it explains why the trilogy’s horror feels connected even when its plots and styles change. The fear is not only of death. It is also of being overlooked, replaced, or reduced to a body whose value is decided by other people.

Performance and exploitation

Everyone in the trilogy is involved in making or selling an image. Pearl performs a version of the life she wants. The X crew creates an adult film to make money and establish itself. Maxine tries to convert one kind of screen visibility into another kind of legitimacy.

West has connected X to independent filmmaking, exploitation cinema, and the historical relationship between horror and pornography. The trilogy does not treat performance as either purely liberating or purely corrupting. It can provide agency and opportunity, but it can also make people vulnerable to buyers, spectators, producers, institutions, and their own need for approval.

Genre as character language

Each film’s genre reflects the emotional world of its central character:

  • Pearl and melodrama: Pearl experiences life as a grand, emotionally heightened story in which she is destined for a larger stage. The film’s colors and performance style make that fantasy visible.
  • X and the slasher: The production team’s attempt to create images becomes a closed survival scenario. The rural location, hidden history, and threat to a group of young people place the film in the tradition of the 1970s slasher and exploitation picture.
  • MaXXXine and Hollywood crime horror: Maxine enters a city built around images, ambition, and institutional power. The film’s neo-noir, giallo, and Hollywood-slasher references make the entertainment industry itself feel like a dangerous set.

The films are cohesive because they repeat concerns, not because they repeat a visual formula. West uses genre as a language for each era and for each stage of the characters’ ambitions.

How the films were made

West wrote X without expecting that it would necessarily be produced. His goal was to combine the formal craft and visual control associated with mainstream cinema with the direct, unapologetic energy of independently made exploitation films.

Pearl emerged as an unexpected continuation of the world created by X. It was filmed back-to-back with X, and its co-writing credit for West and Goth is important to the film’s more interior focus on Pearl’s psychology, fantasy life, and performance.

MaXXXine was conceived as a continuation of Maxine’s story rather than as another Pearl prequel. Moving the action to 1980s Hollywood allowed West to examine a more powerful version of the same image-making machinery: a place where performers are surrounded by larger budgets, stronger institutions, and more formal routes to success, but remain exposed to exploitation and judgment.

West has framed the trilogy’s appeal partly around embracing Hollywood artifice. That idea is visible in the progression from Pearl’s theatrical melodrama, through X’s exploitation construction, to MaXXXine’s overtly cinematic Los Angeles setting.

How to watch and collect the trilogy

Digital and disc availability

Availability changes by country, retailer, subscription service, and edition. A24’s official film pages provide the most stable starting point for current watch and purchase options, but an official page does not guarantee that a particular digital retailer or streaming service will remain available in every region. Check your local listing immediately before watching rather than assuming that a service available in one country is available everywhere.

A24’s individual pages also direct viewers toward DVD and Blu-ray purchase options through retailers including Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Stock, prices, sellers, packaging, format, and regional compatibility can change, so verify those details before ordering.

For collectors

The most complete physical-media option is the X Trilogy Collector’s Edition 4K UHD box set. A24 describes it as a three-disc collection containing X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, available in a Blu-ray or 4K UHD format. The set includes a 64-page booklet, concept art, costume sketches, behind-the-scenes photography, poster and VHS artwork, more than 90 minutes of making-of featurettes, and new commentary tracks. A24 also identifies it as the first U.S. physical release of X and Pearl on 4K UHD.

Choose the 4K UHD version if your player and display support the format and you want the highest-resolution edition offered in the set. Choose Blu-ray if compatibility and simpler playback matter more. Neither format should be assumed to be universally region-free; check the edition details for your location.

For readers and companion collectors

A24 also offers an X Trilogy novelization set by Tim Waggoner, containing X: The Novel, Pearl: The Novel, and MaXXXine: The Novel. These are prose adaptations of the three films and make sense as a companion purchase for readers, collectors, or fans interested in experiencing the stories in another form. They are less essential than the film box set for someone who simply wants to watch the trilogy.

Is the trilogy finished?

MaXXXine is marketed as the final chapter of the released trilogy, and West has described it as a satisfying place to stop. That should be treated as the status of the completed three-film series, not as proof that no future project could ever exist. West has discussed the possibility that another idea might emerge from the universe, but there is no basis here for presenting a fourth installment as confirmed or announced.

Why the trilogy works as a whole

The three movies are connected by more than recurring names and casting. Pearl asks what happens when a person turns a movie-star fantasy into a substitute for a life. X places that history beside a younger performer who is still pursuing visibility. MaXXXine then moves the surviving performer into an industry that promises to make her dream legitimate.

That structure lets West examine the same hunger across different eras. The farm, the adult-film set, and Hollywood are not identical environments, but each organizes people around images and desires. The trilogy’s most unsettling idea is that ambition can be both a route out and a trap: a person may gain the chance to be seen while becoming increasingly dependent on the gaze of others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I watch Pearl before X?

For a first viewing, watch X first. Pearl is chronologically earlier, but it is designed to recontextualize a major character and relationship introduced in X. Use Pearl → X → MaXXXine for a chronological rewatch.

Is MaXXXine a direct sequel to Pearl?

No. MaXXXine continues Maxine’s story after X. Pearl is a prequel and origin story about the older woman encountered in X, although its themes and character history inform the trilogy as a whole.

Is a fourth X trilogy film confirmed?

No. MaXXXine is the final chapter of the currently released trilogy. Ti West has left open the possibility that a future idea could emerge, but that is an uncommitted creative possibility rather than a confirmed fourth film.

What is the best physical collection of the three films?

A24’s X Trilogy Collector’s Edition is the most complete listed collection. It contains X, Pearl, and MaXXXine in a choice of Blu-ray or 4K UHD format, plus a booklet, artwork, behind-the-scenes material, featurettes, and commentary tracks. Verify local stock, price, format, and regional compatibility before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

Watch X → Pearl → MaXXXine the first time, then revisit the films chronologically if you want to follow the timeline from Pearl’s 1918 origins to Maxine’s 1980s Hollywood ambitions. Together, the films form a connected horror saga about performance, exploitation, aging, and the dangerous promise that fame can transform a life.
