That is his historical estimate—not an independent appraisal or a current market valuation. The available account does not substantiate a real-world $1 million price for the belt.
Was the Million Dollar Championship actually worth $1 million?
There is no sourced million-dollar appraisal for the original belt. WWE’s 2013 account quotes DiBiase saying, “The value of the title when it was created was $40,000.” He was describing its value when made in 1988; WWE did not cite an appraisal, invoice, or later sale to verify that figure. WWE’s retrospective also says DiBiase thought the title was worth more later, but gives no later amount.
The “Million Dollar” name suited DiBiase’s wealthy heel persona and the storyline: WWE says he wanted a custom championship he could call worth more than the WWE title. The name is not evidence that the belt had a million-dollar real-world value. WWE’s description of it as “the most expensive wrestling championship to date” is its own framing, not a documented comparative ranking.
What was the original belt made of?
DiBiase described the original as gold plated and set with roughly 700 cubic zirconia stones. He joked that cubic zirconia “means they’re almost diamonds.” Those details come from his recollection as published by WWE, not a materials analysis. In particular, the account supports gold plate—not solid gold—and cubic zirconia—not diamonds.

How did the Million Dollar Championship begin?
The title grew out of DiBiase’s attempt to take the WWE Championship. In WWE’s account, Andre the Giant defeated Hulk Hogan on The Main Event in February 1988, after which DiBiase tried to buy the championship from Andre. WWE President Jack Tunney voided the transaction and declared the title vacant. DiBiase then lost the WrestleMania IV tournament final to Randy Savage.
DiBiase later credited WWE official Pat Patterson with suggesting that he create his own championship. WWE dates the effort to February 15, 1989, and says DiBiase visited Betteridge Jewelers in Greenwich, Connecticut, as the custom belt was made. It debuted on a March 1989 episode of Superstars, according to the retrospective.

The belt later figured in DiBiase’s rivalry with Jake Roberts. At SummerSlam 1991, Virgil defeated DiBiase for it; DiBiase subsequently reclaimed it. WWE’s profile says the self-created championship was never officially recognized by WWE brass, so it should not be described as a recognized WWE world title or treated as a sanctioned championship reign. WWE’s Ted DiBiase profile provides that distinction.
Where is the original Million Dollar Championship now?
Its current location has not been established by the available account. In 2013, WWE said DiBiase believed he had returned the original to a WWE executive and later heard it had been found in a safe. WWE’s own search did not locate it; the company found a replica in its warehouse instead. The article said the answer remained unknown at that time. Those conflicting recollections and a search from 2013 do not establish where the original is today.
