What was the reported backstage reason for the match?
In a March 31, 2026 report, Ringside News attributed the explanation to Sean Ross Sapp: Mysterio had been the planned direction for Gunther, and Breakker was associated with Rollins’s plans. The report said injury-related circumstances sidelined both options, prompting WWE to put Rollins and Gunther together. Sapp’s reported summary was: “So, you put them together, and there you go.” Ringside News
The same report described the March 30 Raw at Madison Square Garden as ending with Rollins attacking Paul Heyman, followed by Gunther choking Rollins out and pointing toward the WrestleMania sign. That sequence set up the match on television; the reported reshuffle explains why WWE arrived at that pairing. Neither the injury-related account nor the booking explanation was presented as an official WWE statement.
What reason did Gunther give on television?
In WrestleZone’s account of the April 13, 2026 Raw, Rollins asked Gunther why he had targeted him. Gunther answered that Rollins had spent years acting as though he were the best wrestler, and said he wanted to prove otherwise: “For years you’ve been walking around like you’re the best in this ring, but you’re not, I am!” He added: “It’s very personal to me to prove that Seth Rollins can’t lace my boots!” WrestleZone

That is Gunther’s character motivation in the storyline: pride and a desire to establish superiority over Rollins. It is distinct from the reported backstage reason the match came together.
How does Paul Heyman fit into the story?
A separate account from WWF Old School says Gunther also framed his actions as solving a problem for Paul Heyman before laying out his personal competitive motive. That adds a Heyman-related angle to the on-screen setup, but it does not change the distinction between the character’s explanation and the reported booking pivot. WWF Old School
