Several wrestlers’ tattoos carry stories that are more personal than their designs first suggest: a tribute to a trainer, a memorial to a beloved dog, cultural identity, faith, music, or a difficult career moment. The documented accounts below explain what the wrestlers or WWE have said about their ink. They do not establish 15 distinct backstories, so this feature focuses on the stories that can be substantiated rather than filling out the count with guesses.
Tributes to people and family
CM Punk: four aces for Ace Steele
The four aces on CM Punk’s arm might look like a lucky charm, but Punk said they honor Ace Steele, the trainer who helped bring him into wrestling. “The four aces may symbolize luck to some people, but they’re really a tribute to Ace Steele, the man responsible for breaking me into the wrestling business,” he told WWE.com in 2007. He added that he does not believe in luck.
CM Punk: a paw print for Callie
Punk also explained that the paw print on his arm belonged to his dog Callie. He made a print of her paw and got it tattooed so he would remember her, describing Callie as “cooler than most humans I know” in the same WWE interview.
Rey Mysterio: children’s names and a prayer
WWE’s retrospective says Rey Mysterio’s tattoos include the names of his children, Aalyah and Dominik, and a prayer to Jesus that a fan gave him. WWE frames his ink as connected to family, religion, and tradition. The official Superstar Ink index also lists a feature about Mysterio’s tattoo tribute to Eddie Guerrero, but the index itself does not explain the design or its precise story.

Cultural identity and connection to the earth
Roman Reigns: Samoan and Pacific identity
Roman Reigns has described his tattoo as an expression of Samoan and Pacific identity, family, and his people. In an Inked Magazine interview reproduced by HotNewHipHop, he said, “For me, [the tattoo] represents our culture,” and described himself as “one of the sons of Samoa” and “one of the sons of the Pacific.”
Reigns also traced his interest in tattoos to his cousin Umaga. He recalled watching Umaga get tattooed and hearing discussions about cultural patterns, customs, and how the patterns fit together. This is Reigns’s account of what his own tattoo means and how his interest began, not a universal explanation of Samoan tattooing.

The Rock: family, protection, and perseverance
WWE says Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson received his Polynesian tattoo in Hawaii in 2003 from Tahitian tattoo artist Po’oino Yrondi, over three long sessions. WWE’s retrospective describes elements associated with struggle, success, spiritual guides, and family loyalty.
In the documentary Once in a Lifetime: The Rock vs. John Cena, as quoted by WWE, Johnson summarized the design’s meaning this way: “It all comes down to three things: my family, protecting my family and having a very aggressive warrior spirit that you can’t hold down. I will continue to fight and overcome.”

Jeff Hardy: roots, water, and blood
Jeff Hardy’s roots design extends from his neck down his right arm to his hand, according to WWE. Hardy explained that it connects the earth to the human body: “The earth’s roots carry water like a human’s veins carry blood,” he told WWE.com in 2007. He said he wanted an idea that felt different from the tribal bands many wrestlers had.

CM Punk: the Operation Ivy logo
Punk’s Operation Ivy logo reflects his affection for the band and its music, he said in his 2007 WWE interview. Alongside his tribute to Steele and memorial to Callie, the logo shows how his tattoos combine distinct parts of his personal life rather than one overarching theme.

Wade Barrett: a Manic Street Preachers lyric
WWE identifies the words “boredom, culture, alienation & despair” on Wade Barrett’s red rose and banner tattoo as a line from Manic Street Preachers’ 1992 song “Little Baby Nothing.” WWE also reported that the band was among Barrett’s favorite groups. The account establishes the lyric and musical connection, but does not provide a fuller first-person explanation from Barrett.
Edge: body art as expression
Edge described body art as a way to express himself and carry a life story on his body in a 2007 WWE interview. WWE’s retrospective identifies the wave on his left arm as apparently inspired by Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa; that specific connection is WWE’s interpretation, rather than a direct explanation attributed to Edge.

When a wrestling career changes a tattoo
Randy Orton: covering the USMC tattoo
Randy Orton told WWE.com that he had “USMC,” for United States Marine Corps, tattooed on his left arm. He said he covered it after receiving a bad-conduct discharge and being sent home. Orton recalled that an initial cover-up in San Diego was poorly done and later had to be fixed by another artist. This is Orton’s account of the tattoo’s history.
Randy Orton: a back piece affected by wrestling
Orton also said his back piece was done while he was training and wrestling in Ohio Valley Wrestling. Frequent wrestling disrupted the healing and damaged the tattoo, leading to repeated retouching. In the WWE interview, he recalled that annual color retouching sessions took about six hours.
Why these backstories matter
A tattoo’s appearance does not reliably reveal its meaning. These accounts range from first-person explanations—such as Punk’s explanation of the aces and Orton’s account of his cover-up—to WWE’s descriptions and interpretations. Where a wrestler’s own explanation is available, it offers the clearest guide; where it is not, a visual resemblance or publisher description should not be mistaken for a confirmed personal story.
