Held August 13–17, the 83rd World Science Fiction Convention drew on Seattle’s 1961 Worldcon and the 1962 Century 21 Exposition, while asking who earlier visions of progress included—and who they left out. Its theme put the answer plainly: “Building Yesterday’s Future — for Everyone.”

What was the theme of Seattle Worldcon?
“Building Yesterday’s Future — for Everyone” tied the convention to two Seattle milestones: the city’s 1961 Worldcon and the 1962 Century 21 Exposition. Rather than treating the past as a simple story of technological progress, the theme used science fiction’s habit of imagining what comes next to revisit who was invited into those earlier futures and who was excluded.

The event’s theme statement captured its central claim: “A better future must include everyone.” The theme page also describes the 1962 fair as one of only two World Fairs in history to make money and reports that the Seattle Monorail carried 8 million guests to the fair. Those are figures and claims made by the organizers’ theme page, not independently verified here.
What happened at the convention?
The program went well beyond author talks. Seattle Worldcon’s official schedule described hundreds of hours of events across science fiction, fantasy, horror, science, costuming, art, writing, and genre film and television. That range made the convention a meeting point for creative work, fan culture and ideas about science—not just a series of literary panels.

The Hugo Awards were a major event within that broader program. The 2025 Hugo, Astounding and Lodestar winners were announced and presented at the convention on August 16. The convention later apologized for multiple failure points during the Hugo ceremony, so its place as a central event does not mean the ceremony ran without problems. The official Hugo page also records administrator Tammy Coxen’s observation: “There was a lot of enthusiasm for the Best Poem category in Seattle.” That remark refers to that category, not to the convention as a whole.

Not through the original member replay window: the organizers said replays for members would end in December 2025. On August 23, 2025, they reported that about 120 of 193 recorded panels and events had been posted. The schedule said the opening, Hugo and closing ceremonies would remain public on YouTube, but current availability should be checked on the convention’s official channels rather than assumed.
