World Asteroid Day falls every year on 30 June. The United Nations designated the date in 2016 to mark the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia on 30 June 1908 and to raise public awareness of the asteroid impact hazard. The observance is about education and preparedness, not alarm. As of the most recent dated evidence reviewed for this article, no object covered here carries a current prediction of an Earth impact. The 2032 scenario for asteroid 2024 YR4 was reduced to a very small probability, and the Apophis close approach in 2029 is expected to be safe.

Why Asteroid Day is held on 30 June

The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/71/90 in December 2016. The resolution asks member states to observe each year, at the international level, the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard. The date was chosen because Tunguska is the best-known modern example of an object exploding in the atmosphere over a populated region.

The observance also has a crisis-communication purpose. If a credible threat from a near-Earth object were ever identified, governments and agencies would need a shared way to inform the public. The UN states that the day helps build that global awareness before any such event.

Where the observance came from

The UN designation came after the grassroots initiative. Asteroid Day’s organizers say it was co-founded by astrophysicist Brian May, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grig Richters and B612 Foundation president Danica Remy. The organizers describe a year-round education mission covering asteroid science, space resources, impact risk and planetary defense, delivered through events and educational resources. The UN’s 2016 designation and the organizers’ campaign are separate, and it is worth keeping them apart when citing either.

Tunguska and Chelyabinsk: the events behind the day

The UN describes the Tunguska event as Earth’s largest asteroid impact in recorded history. The reviewed UN page does not give a size or energy estimate for the Tunguska object, so none is quoted here. Two other events are useful for scale because their sizes and energies have been estimated.

Event Date Approximate object size Reported mass or energy Attribution
Tunguska impact, Siberia 30 June 1908 Not stated Not stated UN page; described as Earth’s largest recorded asteroid impact
Chelyabinsk superbolide, Russia 2013 About 18 m Estimated mass 11,000 tonnes; impact energy 440 kilotons of TNT UN page estimates
Meteor Crater, Arizona, USA About 50,000 years ago Roughly 50 m object; crater about 1.2 km across Not stated NASA page; publication year not stated on the reviewed page

Treat the Chelyabinsk and Meteor Crater figures as published estimates, not measurements of a recovered object.

How near-Earth objects are defined

A near-Earth object, or NEO, is an asteroid or comet whose orbit brings it within 1.3 astronomical units of the Sun, about 195 million kilometres. The UN also uses a size and distance threshold to describe the most serious category: objects larger than about 140 metres that come closer than 0.05 astronomical units (about 7.5 million kilometres) to Earth’s orbit represent potentially catastrophic threats.

The phrase “potentially hazardous” is a screening label. It describes an object’s orbit and size in a way that justifies closer tracking. It does not mean that an object is predicted to hit Earth. The UN reports more than 36,000 discovered near-Earth asteroids, and most are tracked precisely enough to rule out a collision for centuries.

How often impacts happen

NASA publishes approximate impact rates that help put the hazard in proportion. The reviewed NASA page does not state a publication year, so these figures are presented as NASA estimates without a date.

  • More than 100 tons of dust- and sand-sized particles reach Earth each day.
  • An automobile-sized asteroid enters the atmosphere about once a year on average, creating a fireball.
  • An object about the size of a football field causes significant damage about once every 5,000 years on average.

Small objects are common and mostly burn up harmlessly. Large objects are rare, which is why detection effort concentrates on the largest and most dangerous population.

2024 YR4: how a risk estimate changed

The asteroid 2024 YR4 is the clearest recent example of why impact probabilities must always be read with their observation date. A NASA technical report describes how the calculated probability of an Earth impact on 22 December 2032 changed as observations accumulated:

  • Peak: 3.1% during the early tracking period.
  • After observations through 23 February 2025: 0.004%, or about 1 chance in 26,000.
  • The report concludes there was no significant potential for an Earth impact over the next century.

The lesson is that early high probabilities often shrink as an orbit is refined. A headline percentage describes the state of knowledge on a given date, not a fixed or current danger.

Apophis in 2029

The asteroid 99942 Apophis is the most important forward-looking date for public engagement. According to the UN, it will pass safely about 32,000 kilometres above Earth on 13 April 2029, inside geostationary orbit, and poses no threat. The UN expects the close approach to be visible to billions of people with the naked eye under clear skies.

The General Assembly declared 2029 the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence in 2024. Apophis is best understood as a rare scientific opportunity: researchers will be able to study a near-Earth asteroid at very close range, and the event will give the public a concrete reason to learn how these objects are tracked.

Detection and deflection: where the tools stand

The programmes below are at different stages. Only the DART test has been carried out in space. The table shows the status reported in the sources reviewed for this article.

Programme Type Status reported Source and date
NEO Surveyor (NASA) Spacecraft with infrared instruments for finding near-Earth objects In development; preparing for launch no earlier than fall 2027 NASA update dated 30 June 2026; launch target may change
DART (NASA) Kinetic impact test Completed in 2022; struck Dimorphos and changed its orbit around Didymos ESA account of the mission
Hera (ESA) Follow-up mission Designed to study the Didymos asteroid system and the effects of the DART impact ESA; launch and arrival dates not stated in the reviewed sources

NEO Surveyor’s infrared design matters because dark objects that reflect little visible light are hard to see, and objects near the direction of the Sun are hard to observe from the ground. NASA identifies both as gaps its instruments are meant to close.

The DART result shows that a kinetic impact can change an asteroid’s orbit. It does not show that every future threat could be deflected, and warning time, object size and composition all affect what would be possible.

Who coordinates the response

The UN lists two international mechanisms. The International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) is the body that shares observations and analysis. The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group (SMPAG) was established in 2014 following international recommendations and addresses mission planning for a possible response. Together they are the structures that would turn a detection into coordinated action.

How to read asteroid news

  • Check the date of any impact probability. A percentage without an observation date cannot be compared with another one.
  • Separate “potentially hazardous” from “predicted to hit.” The first is a screening category.
  • Look for the object’s orbit and size. Probability depends on both, and a small change in orbit can move an estimate considerably.
  • Distinguish demonstrated techniques, such as DART, from planned missions such as NEO Surveyor and Hera.

On 30 June each year, the most useful thing to watch is not a single object but the steady work of tracking, refining orbits and preparing responses.
