Why the sources agree, and what that does not prove
Two dated secondary sources give the same puzzle number, date and answer, which is why this page treats SKULL as the answer. Those sources do not show that the puzzle was checked against NYT’s own archive, so the answer is best read as corroborated rather than officially confirmed.
