Wonder Women is a fiction feature, not a documentary. Anjali Menon’s multilingual ensemble follows pregnant women who meet in a prenatal class run by Nandita and form friendships while preparing for childbirth. The 2022 Scroll.in review by Nandini Ramnath, published November 18, 2022, reads it as a warm, breezy tribute to female solidarity, carried by its cast, that handles some of its hardest subjects too lightly.
What kind of film this is
Wonder Women is an ensemble drama, not a superhero film despite its title. The details below come from the 2022 Scroll.in review.
- Format: Fiction feature with an ensemble cast.
- Runtime: Roughly 79 minutes.
- Language: Mainly English, with dialogue in Tamil, Marathi, Hindi and Telugu.
- Release: Reported as released through SonyLIV. The review does not establish whether the title is available in every region today, so check the platform’s listing for your country before you press play.
The premise: a prenatal class that becomes a circle
The film’s setting is a class in which expectant women gather to prepare for childbirth. Over the course of the story they become friends. The women do not share the same circumstances or the same attitude toward pregnancy, and the film keeps those differences visible rather than smoothing them into one experience.
Nandita’s class and its upbeat default
Nandita’s class sets the emotional temperature. Its mood is insistent and cheerful, and the film mirrors that energy through its pacing and its frequent music. The review notes that the music amplifies the cheerfulness, which is a fair description of how the film presents itself: as a group effort that is meant to lift the viewer as much as its characters.

Mini as the counterweight
Mini is the figure who pushes against that mood. Her grumpiness and dissent interrupt the class’s upbeat cheer, and the review identifies her as the most useful point of entry into the film’s approach to pregnancy. Her presence keeps the solidarity theme from becoming a uniform celebration. Solidarity here is a choice made among people who do not all feel the same way about what they are going through.
What works
- The ensemble performances. The review’s main praise goes to the actors, who are given relatable characters to play.
- A brisk, light tone. The film moves quickly and does not linger on discomfort, which suits its feel-good goal.
- Music that sets the mood. Frequent music keeps the cheer constant, so the film’s warmth is audible as well as visible.
- A multilingual cast. The mix of English, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi and Telugu dialogue reflects a group of women drawn from different backgrounds.
Where the lightness costs it
The review’s central reservation is that the light treatment lets serious themes pass too quickly. Two subjects stand out, and both are ones a viewer might reasonably expect a film about pregnancy to explore at more length.

Fear of childbirth pain
The film touches on fear of childbirth pain, but the review argues that it does not give the fear the weight it deserves. For viewers who want an honest look at what expectant women are afraid of, the story may feel more like a brief acknowledgment than a sustained exploration.
Men’s share of child-rearing
The review also identifies the importance of men sharing child-rearing responsibilities as a theme the film raises without developing. Since the story is so focused on women supporting one another, this gap is noticeable: the question of how parenting is divided within households is one the film gestures toward but does not pursue.

How to judge it against other ensemble dramas
The cited review does not compare Wonder Women with any specific rival film, so no ranking is established here. If you are weighing it against another ensemble drama, these are the axes the review’s observations support:
- Warmth versus dramatic depth: Does the film prioritize comfort and encouragement, or does it stay with difficult feelings?
- Ensemble characterization: Do the supporting characters, such as Mini, have room to be more than types?
- Treatment of pregnancy and childbirth: Does the film address fear and physical experience directly?
- Shared parenting: Does the story examine how responsibility for children is divided, or only point to it?
Who it suits
Wonder Women suits viewers who want a light, warm film about friendship among women who are expecting, and who value a strong ensemble cast over a probing account of childbirth. It is less satisfying for viewers who expect the film to dwell on fear of labor or on men’s roles in parenting. The review’s own judgment is that the film is a pleasant, affirming tribute whose emotional honesty stops short of its subject matter.
