Spoilers ahead. In Woman of the Hour, Amy escapes Rodney Alcala at a gas station and reports him to police. The closing titles then say he is released on bail and kills again. Sheryl survives her date and leaves Hollywood, but her story is a film resolution—not a documented account of the real Cheryl Bradshaw’s later life.
Does Amy escape Alcala?
Yes. After Alcala assaults Amy, he breaks down. When he stops at a gas station, Amy uses the opening to flee and reach help; she tells police what happened. Netflix’s ending account describes her escape and the film’s closing revelation: Alcala is released on bail and goes on to kill again.

That final turn gives Amy’s escape two meanings at once. She survives and acts, but the film shows that her report does not immediately end the danger. The ending points beyond one woman’s survival to a system that failed to stop Alcala.
What happens to Sheryl at the end?
Sheryl survives the date with Alcala, returns home, and decides Hollywood is not for her. In the final hallway moment, she refuses to move aside for her pushy neighbor. It is a small, personal act of agency after repeated pressure to accommodate men—not a suggestion that she has resolved every danger around her.

The film calls its bachelorette Sheryl; the real woman was Cheryl Bradshaw. The ending in which Sheryl leaves Hollywood is a story choice. The sources cited here do not establish what Bradshaw did later, so the film’s resolution should not be read as biography.
What does the final gasp and cut to black mean?
Director and star Anna Kendrick connected the ending’s sound to Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, telling Netflix Tudum: “That’s the chord resolving at the end of Into the Woods, and then one last ‘I wish’ ringing out.” Her explanation frames the final moment as a mix of release and sorrow: there is an emotional resolution, but the story’s losses and unanswered wishes remain.

What is true about Rodney Alcala, and what did the film change?
The historical outline is real: Alcala appeared on the 1970s television show The Dating Game and won a date with Cheryl Bradshaw while committing murders. Netflix, TIME and the Associated Press report that he was convicted of seven murders; TIME and AP report that he died on death row in 2021. Netflix’s film background also notes that estimates of his possible victim count have reached as high as 130. That is an estimate, not a conviction count.
| Film detail | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| The bachelorette is named Sheryl. | The real contestant was Cheryl Bradshaw. Netflix’s account of the true story identifies the name change. |
| Alcala is Bachelor Number Three. | TIME notes that the real Alcala was Bachelor Number One. |
| Laura recognizes Alcala in the audience; Amy escapes him. | Netflix describes Laura as representing people who tried to raise alarms and were ignored. The film’s characters and events are not proof that those particular witnesses or encounters occurred as shown. |
| The show’s dialogue and Sheryl’s later life. | Netflix says the filmmakers fictionalized the show dialogue. The sources here do not establish a later-life account for the real Cheryl Bradshaw; Sheryl’s decision to leave Hollywood belongs to the film. |
The film is therefore not a scene-by-scene record of the case. It reshapes names, dialogue and plotlines to tell a story about women targeted by Alcala and warnings that were ignored. Screenwriter Ian McDonald told Netflix Tudum that Alcala’s behavior could seem “charming by 1978 standards,” while modern viewers would recognize it as alarming. Kendrick likewise described the institutional context: “There are so many heroes in this story, but the heroes were outnumbered and outgunned by incompetence and negligence and a culture that did not prioritize victims.”
