Wolf Man (2025) reworks familiar werewolf material as a grotesque family-in-peril story, with Christopher Abbott at its center. Its first reviews were divided: some critics praised the tension, practical makeup and Abbott’s performance, while others found the storytelling muddled or poorly paced. The clearest takeaway is not consensus acclaim, but an ambitious horror film whose lead performance drew notice even from critics who disliked the result.

What is Wolf Man about?

Universal’s film follows Blake, who takes his wife Charlotte and daughter Ginger to his childhood home in rural Oregon. An animal attack leaves the family trapped inside, and Blake begins behaving in increasingly monstrous ways. The setup makes the transformation a threat within a family, rather than simply a monster loose in the wilderness.

Leigh Whannell directed the film, which stars Abbott, Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger, Matilda Firth and Benedict Hardie. Universal classifies it as horror and thriller, rates it R for bloody violent content, grisly images and some language, and lists a runtime of 1 hour 42 minutes. Apple TV rounds the runtime to 1 hour 43 minutes; runtimes can be displayed differently across services.

What did the first reviews say?

The early response was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup, written by Christopher Campbell and updated May 1, 2025, introduced the film as inventive, engaging, intense and thrilling, and highlighted its practical makeup effects. But the roundup also characterized it as divisive and not a top-tier Blumhouse film. Its selected reviews ranged from calling it “a rock-solid thriller” to judging it a mid-tier rather than top-tier entry.

That contrast matters: the roundup’s positive language does not mean critics agreed that the movie worked. The Los Angeles Times and The Guardian published notably negative reviews on January 15, 2025, though both identified elements they valued.

Christopher Abbott’s performance stood apart for some critics

In the Los Angeles Times, Amy Nicholson criticized the pacing and storytelling while describing Abbott as “a serious talent” and praising the empathy he conveys through his eyes. Her response separates the actor’s work from her reservations about the film around him.

Reviews differed on the film’s execution and themes

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw called the film muddled and unsatisfying, while singling out an excellent opening prologue and a smart final shot. Bradshaw read the story as linking transformation with inheritance, fear and abusive fatherhood; that is the critic’s interpretation, not a stated account of the filmmakers’ intent.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 47% Tomatometer when its roundup page was accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of a changing review aggregator, not a fixed measure of the film or a measure of audience opinion. The roundup itself was updated in May 2025, so its selected early reviews and a later score snapshot answer different questions.

Is Wolf Man worth watching?

It is a reasonable pick for viewers interested in body horror, family-centered monster stories or a performance-focused take on a familiar creature. Abbott’s work is a notable point of interest even in a sharply critical review, and the early coverage points to grotesque makeup and an effective opening sequence as possible draws.

Viewers who need tight pacing or a story that fully resolves its ideas may be less satisfied: those are central criticisms in the Los Angeles Times and Guardian reviews. The first-review record supports calling the film divisive, not a safe recommendation for every horror fan.

When did it open, and where can you watch it at home?

The film opened theatrically on different dates by market: January 16, 2025, in Australia and January 17 in the United States and United Kingdom. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced digital purchase and rental from February 4, 2025, followed by limited-edition SteelBook, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions on March 18, 2025. The studio said those home editions include more than 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes material.

Universal’s title page currently lists 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital, Blu-ray + Digital and DVD editions, and says the film can be bought or rented digitally. Apple TV has a US title listing. Services, editions and availability vary by region, and the available listings do not establish current retailer stock or a universal streaming subscription option.
