Wizards Beyond Waverly Place brings back the Russo family’s magical world with a new center of gravity: Justin is an adult who has chosen a mortal life, and Alex returns with Billie, a young wizard who needs a mentor. Season one recaptures much of the original’s family-comedy appeal, but its most promising change is the shift from sibling rivalry to an uneasy teacher-and-student partnership.

What season one changes—and what it brings back

Disney presents Wizards Beyond Waverly Place as a continuation of Wizards of Waverly Place. Its central twist is that Justin Russo has set magic aside for a normal life with his family. Alex brings Billie to him seeking wizard training, pulling Justin back into the world he had left behind. That reversal gives the sequel a clear engine: the former young wizard must now be the responsible adult, while a new generation faces the temptations and complications of magic.

The series keeps recognizable ties to the original through David Henrie as Justin and Selena Gomez’s return as Alex, while changing the household around them. The principal cast also includes Janice LeAnn Brown as Billie, Alkaio Thiele as Roman Russo, Max Matenko as Milo Russo, Taylor Cora as Winter, and Mimi Gianopulos as Giada Russo. The result is not simply a reunion tour. Justin’s family and Billie’s training give the story new relationships to develop, even as Alex provides a direct bridge to the old one.

The magic mostly returns because the premise preserves the franchise’s useful contrast: ordinary family life can be disrupted by extraordinary abilities, and the people wielding those abilities are still learning how to make good choices. But season one is no longer built around the original siblings competing with one another. The mentor-and-student setup asks whether Justin and Billie can generate an equally lively comic partnership—and whether the newer Russo family members feel like characters in their own right rather than accessories to a familiar name.

Does the sequel work for longtime fans and new viewers?

The strongest reason for an original-series fan to try the sequel is the changed version of Justin. He is not simply repeating his younger self’s story: he has made a life outside magic, and Alex’s request puts that choice under pressure. Billie, meanwhile, offers a newcomer a point of entry into the rules and risks of being a wizard. The two-part setup can serve both audiences, though the balance depends on how much a viewer values continuity with the Russos versus the new cast.

The available reviews point to that mixed-audience aim rather than proving every episode satisfies it. Metacritic’s season-one page listed four critic reviews when accessed on October 4, 2026, and described praise in that small sample for the magical moments, laughs, and appeal to adults who know the original as well as children encountering the story for the first time. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu, quoted on Rotten Tomatoes, called it “A worthy follow-up to its legendary original that will undoubtedly delight newcomers and longtime fans.”

Those are encouraging signals, not a substitute for a broad critical consensus. The more useful question for a prospective viewer is whether the new family dynamic is appealing on its own. Nostalgia helps establish the connection, but the sequel has to make Justin’s reluctance, Billie’s training, and the younger Russos matter beyond callbacks.

Season-one reception, in context

Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one page showed an 89% Tomatometer from 9 critic reviews and a 93% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026. These are dated, changeable aggregator snapshots, and the critic sample is small; they should be read as a generally favorable early reception rather than a definitive measure of quality.

Disney has also reported audience reach, but those figures need to be kept distinct from independent ratings. When announcing season two on March 31, 2025, Disney Branded Television said the first episode had received 3.2 million global views in its first 12 days. In its April 2, 2026 final-chapter announcement, The Walt Disney Company said the series had more than 101 million Disney Channel YouTube views from launch. The same announcement said it ranked among the top five titles overall with children ages 6–11, teens ages 12–17, and adults ages 18–24 in views, attributing those rankings to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings for live viewing from October 30 to November 26, 2024. These are publisher-reported figures, not the same thing as review scores or a measure of how every viewer felt about the season.

Season one is not the end of the story

Disney announced a second season on March 31, 2025. On April 2, 2026, the company announced a four-part final chapter returning in summer 2026 on Disney+, Disney Channel, and Disney Channel On Demand. Season one is therefore an entry point to a continuing sequel, not the latest chapter in the franchise’s story.

Disney+ lists the series and season-one episodes. Catalog access can differ by territory; no current subscription price or plan is established here. Check the Disney+ listing for availability in your region.

Verdict

Season one makes a sensible sequel out of a familiar world: Justin’s chosen mortal life gives his return to magic stakes, while Billie’s arrival creates a fresh mentor relationship instead of simply recreating the original sibling dynamic. The reception snapshots are favorable but limited, and the show’s longer arc continues beyond this season. For fans curious about what happened to the Russos—and viewers open to meeting a new young wizard—the magic is recognizable, with enough change in the setup to justify the return.
